OT: Big Screen over Fire Place?

Hey guys i have a question. As some of you may know i am moving in the next two weeks and also upgrading to a 225g tank. i have a new 52'' Sony Bravia i just got about 2 months ago. i want to mount it on the wall. So my question is it ok to have it over the fire place? i plan on using the fire place and i dont want the heat that it emits to damage my new tv. Any one have there TV set up like this. Any tips or problems from this?

I have experience with putting the brackets on ive done about 4 tvs on the wall but not over a fire place.

Any feedback is appreciated thanks

Curious as well, my big screen sit about 3' from front of fireplace and havent used fireplace in fear it might damage my TV!

I've wired several houses in the santa barbara/montecito area and installed plasmas above working fireplaces. My concern is more for the wires in the dead space, that they are routed away from the flue and firebox. we generally run a plastic conduit from the tv mount to the equip. cabinet. and and mount to the studs away from the working parts of the fireplace. The tv should have a safety so that if it gets to hot it shuts off.

It's not really ergonomic, i've installed a few LCD's above fireplaces and even up higher. Being a Video/Audio file the TV should be at eye for comfort. You can only watch your TV up there for so long without getting uncomfortable. A few of the people who I have installed them for have called me a second time to remove it.

Vent free gas fireplace you're asking for trouble as all the heat will come out of the fireplace and most of it will go straight up. Wood fireplace, most of the heat that the fire produces gets sucked out the chimney anyways so I'd bet you'd be good with that type but don't take my word for it. I have vent free gas and so do mom and dad. They have an oil painting directly above the fireplace which gets quite hot.

Vented gas fireplace, not sure.

so when your drivin down the freeway and your car overheats because it just plain gets too hot do you pull over and let it cool down and check the coolant or do you run it until it stops?
I pull over fill the radiator and check for leaks it all depends on if you like to break something and replace astethically it may look nice but it is far from practical a keeping it cool on a hot wall is not going to work and your only asking for trouble IC chip allready get very hot and at times especially on Sony wega TV's will fry just from the heat generated inside the TV itself sure LCD or wall mounted HD tv is a bit different but still for that type of investment I would not even chance it.................. my 2 cents............

im not expert on chimneys. but this house im moving into the chimney is flat on the wall its not poppped out like other ones. also its powered by gas. It has some small fake looking wood things on it also but it does not burn down. the house is a two story house. so the chimeney goes all the way up.

Does the heat escaped though the living room or does it come out into the living room.

The mount i plan on using is adjustable so the tv will be aimed down. i estimate the lowest point of the tv will be about 5'' 10 from the floor.

Can you run the wires outside? Perhaps hidden by some molding vs. inside the wall.

I would be concerned if the TV is too high for viewing comfort. The adjustable tilt mount you mentioned could help though.

+1 even when tilted down.

also the heat coming from the fireplace will go straight up.
heat rises.

Vent Free means nothing goes up the chimney. The chimney is closed. No heat is lost up the chimney. 99.9% efficient.

that's cool, so they're a retrofit? is the wall burning hot above it? how do they get rid of the carbon monoxide etc. from burning the gas?

There is no to minimal CO so no venting is required. Anything hanging on the wall in the path of the heat will get hot. The wall itself doesn't get hot.

that might cook us here in socal, 60 is cold to us! fireplace is more for mood than anything, at least for those of us on the coast! My old place we had glass doors on the fireplace, and you could barely feel the heat.

You can mount it above the fireplace (we do at work all the time, I work at best buy). I always inform my customers that they will be replacing that TV every 3-5 years or so because of the heat issue. Depending on how much you use the fireplace and how long. Also depends on how long you watch the tv too.

^^Common Sense.

You'll be amazed at how many people attempt to tell you different... Just my .02 cents though...

i have my flatscreen mounted at seated eye level. when i go to my friends that have them mounted higher like a painting...it is very uncomfortable to watch after a short time.

yeah, a flat screen may look aesthetic and cool in a magazine ad but is quite far from real life.

to sound like a hypocrite, i am planning on putting a very high def digital pic frame above the fireplace to rotate art. but this is not for video viewing...it is just for ambient setting.
