OT: Building a PC

Hi,

I got all of the components for the new PC and put them all together. I've checked up all of the connections to make sure all of them are connected properly, i.e., power cables, connections to various components such as video card, hard drive, dvd drive, jumpers setting, ect...

When I plugged in the computer, nothing was happen. I see that a little red light next to the power setting cable (connecting the power on button from the case to the motherboard) was on.

Aside from this, nothing was really on.

Could someone please let me know what's happened and what have I done wrong?

The components are:

Case - Antec Sonata III 500
Motherboard - MSI P7N SLI-FI
CPU - Intel Dual Core E7200
CPU Fan - Zalman CNPS9700 NT
RAM - 4 GiG Cosair PC6400 (800Mhz)
Video Card - e Geforce 9600 GT SSC edition (what is SSC edition??? - Please let me know what is it and if it is compatible with the motherboard)
Hard Drive - Western Digital (Sata interface)
DVD - Liteon (EDI interface)

Thanks for your help.

did you plug the power switch jumpers? if the cable is bad, u can tap the two connectors with a screwdrive to see if it powers on.

try plugging the monitor into the video jack on the motherboard...

then see if you get anything..

I think you will see that you need to go to the bios and set the bios to turn the onboard video OFF, so that your new video card will be recognized

good luck

if that aint it... you would need to have someone look at it to make sure everything is plugged in properly...

It is a video card problem, Check your motherboard booklet the red light tells you something, it should be green. Either the power for the card is not enough or as they suggested the onboard video chip is causing trouble.
Is this a reef ready case, did you have it drilled? :)

start with the basics. power supply to the board and the cpu, video to the monitor. if it doesn't post, i.e. red light it''s probably the board, then add ram, hdd, etc one by one. video card last...

you also need to install an operating system such as windows once you resolve the basic power problems.

lol i think thats a given.

your BIOS should kick in once you get the video card working. Does the Hardrive light blink or stay on? What kind of power supply are you using what it the rating?

thanks for the suggestion guys/gals. I took everything apart and put them back together. Now that everything is powered on, including the video card. Except the monitor says there is no signals :(

Suggestion please!

Is the light on the board still red? It sound either your video card is defective or the power supply you have is not enough to power it. Did you checked the BIOS settings? Is your Video card competible with your mother board?

Cagdas,

I figured out that the red light indicates that there is power in the motherboard while green is powered up.

Can check the bios if there is no video signal. I think there is more than enough power for the video card as its fan is running and I don't have much stuff beside the DVD and a hard disk.

Can't take pix as there is no video. Nothing to be seen...

This might be very basic but from the last post you said that nothing can be seen.

My guess:
1. Power supply is no good. does it even goes on?
2. The Motherboard is no good.
**3. Is the cpu truely connected to the motherboard. I know someone that installed computer and once they forgot to lift the lever and insert the cpu correctly. All they had was a black screen when the push the power button.

Well I meant the picture of the motherboard and the card, It looks like your motherboard can do SLI and you have one Video card, so I guess there is some settings for that check that, also you need to insert the card in to the dark blue slot I guess that is the primary video slot. I will download and look in to the motherboard booklet. Will let you know if I come up with something.

You don't have an other older video card laying around do you?

d34532,

I think everything is work as far as getting the power. Otherwise, it would beeps.

Cagdas, I inserted the video into the main slot. I got two new video card and only tried one so far. Will tried the other one later. thanks for your help!

Well good luck, How far are you from Sierra Madre 91024. If not too far I can come and have a look if you want.

Thanks Cagdas,

I am in Orange county. i would have brought a six pack and my pc if you're close by.

Yea that is kind a far, what kind of a power supply you have? Is the card directly connected to the power supply? it is better to have an individual cable for the video card not a split from HDD or DVD. So you said the motherboard does not beep at all, fans work, does the hard disk start spin, What kind of monitor you have LCD ? Do you connect directly to the DVI or do you use the adapter?

Power supply is Earth Watt 500.

the card is directly connected to the power supply and it has it own coard.

Fan works, HDD spinds, and DVD works, I have a LCD monitor and have to use the adapter because the video card is in DVI and the monitor is in the old video connection
