OT: Car question...

In the last ice storm my wife's windshield wipers froze to the windshield. They were then turned on and have stuck straight up when turned off since. While on they look and act fine, but as soon as they are supposed to shut off they stick straight up. Any of you have this happen before or know how to fix it?

Let me guess she drives a grand prix or bonneville

Holy crap you are good, or pontiac is really bad.... :p

Any suggestions?

OK it isnt too bad, if you can build a reef tank you can do this

Pop off black caps at bottom of each wiper.
take off 13mm nut off of each & remove wiper.
Take the cowling off the drivers side so you can see the linkage
On the drivers side there is a mechanism that parks the wipers. It is gold & unusally has a spring round them.
When you turn the wipers off there is a little lever that is supposed to hit a tab to park the wipers.
Take a straight screwdriver & hammer & bend that tab back a little bit. The tab is actually sticking up from the bottom, not on the linkage itself.

Gimme a call if you need help.

Sweet!!!

Been looking online for 2 days for that exact explaination... Actually I have been procrastinating for 2 days cause seeing the car driving around with the wipers up makes me laugh...

I will definatly take a crack at this tomorrow, but does it make a difference if the wipers are trying to park when they go up on the final stroke? It is like they are running backwards on the parking stroke. Like I said above though, they are aligned perfect everywhere else in their cycle, so I bet you are right.

You shouldnt have to worry about anything but bending that tab back. Font take anything else apart & you will be fine. Very rarely the little mechanism will be junk but mostly it is the tab.

You were dead on!!! Beat the little tab into submission and it went back to work like nothing happened. I was surprised at how simple that mechanism is. Now dealing with plastic below freezing that is another story and lesson learned. Let just say I will be making a trip to the local salvage yard next spring... :p

Good I am glad it worked. I know what you mean about the cold. Just put wipers on a Taurus the other morning & the windshield cracked. Didnt make any profit on those for sure.
