OT Cell phone

Verizon is the best network, iPhone is the best phone... so to some extent you have to pick what's most important to you.

Android is the windows of the mobile world = available everywhere, easy app development/deployment, lower quality standards. Apple is apple = proprietary stuff, but much better quality control.

I'm on verizon because I need their network/coverage. I've got a droid x which is decent... I'm probably going to root it to hopefully speed it up and make it more reliable.

Completely agree with Jackson. I've been on Sprint, AT&T, and am now on Verizon. Sprint gives you the most for your money of the big three, but their network has the worst coverage of them as well. AT&T recently fell to the bottom of the list in customer satisfaction surveys, primarily due to the fact that the iPhone as taxed their network to beyond it's capabilities (and thus the high volume of dropped calls that people complain about - but, the iPhone is an amazing device). Verizon has the best network coverage in the northeast, and was the best solution for me (though I hate Verizon as a corporation, because IMHO they are a bunch of evil, money-grubbing leeches, just like Time Warner, but that's another discussion altogether).

If you can live with Sprint's network and a device that isn't necessarily on the cutting edge, I would also tell you to take a look at Virgin Mobile. You can get the Samsung Intercept Android phone right now for $175, and for $40/month you get 1200 minutes of talk time, with UNLIMITED text and data. From a value standpoint, nobody gets close to Virgin Mobile, but your choices of phone are severely limited.

Good luck...

iPhone is the best phone...

When I had an iPhone I thought that was true. Since then I've had a Blackberry Storm (worst phone in the world IMHO - clunky awkward software, unreliable hardware) and a Droid 2. As far as I am concerned, some of the core features in Andriod make the iPhone OS feel tacky and outdated. Of course this is largely a matter of personal preference.

Open source advocates across the world just felt the hair on their neck stand straight up.

I think we are talking apples and oranges to some extent. I have a droid x, and have had most of the previous droid models (verizon) at one point or other. IMO, there are some nice functionalities in Android that iPhone can't match... but only if you use/need them. My comment was more regarding the "bugginess" of the phones. Say what you want about added functionalities, the iPhone just runs better/smoother/more reliably.

Now, once I root my phone I may have a different feeling, but now we're not talking about average use anymore.

I'm an advocate of open source, but the comparison holds as far as mass development, low quality assurance. My phone hangs/reboots more often than my PC does!
