OT: Chevy Impala - Transmission or sensor?

Great another problem. I have notice if I'm at a stop and get on the gas kind of hard (Not to the floor) that the car will not change gears :confuse: If I don't get on it hard it will shift fine. I had the Transmission Filter changed this morning and still did it. I was wondering if there is a sensor I need to be looking at? Or do I have a Major transmission problem getting ready to strat?

When the car shifts gears it is a smooth shift like always.. Just will not shift if I get on it? Any thoughts?

Any warning lites on the dash? My first thought is the pressure control solenoid in the trans. That's a pretty common failure on that one but *usually* it sets a code.
 
It has a 4T65E auto trans. I still say pressure control solenoid and/or valvebody conern. See what John sez....
 
First thing I would do is turn the key to the on position without stating the vehicle and see if your check engine light even works .

I will look and see if there are any tech bullitens

check engine light does work.. When I had problems with my MAF sensor it didn't come on until it really started messing with my car. However it did show up when I took it to autozone. I took it there this morning, and they refused to test it because there was no light on.. I think it was just to cold for them.. aholes.

John what do you think about what Robbie said?
 
The only bulliten I found that may apply is 01-07-30-014 delayed/extended shifts. says to replace shift solenoids ( valve body repr). I see this type of repair quite a bit. How many miles are on that thing now Lonnie?
 
See what John says. Thats a fair amount of miles on the trans. With the expense of what I suspect you may be better off replacing it with a newer used one. The labor is very intensive on that trans, it's only a little more time, like an extra hour or so, to pull it out and replace it vs getting to the solenoids.
 
same here . Robbie sounds like he has the same info as me . I would say he has more experence with this type of repair than me . We are engine guys than Trans guys

I figured the same thing on this issue. To just replace the Tranny verse repairing it. I'm more the same as John here, I don't know a whole lot about the transmission more on the engine. I suggested getting some quotes on a new trans and I'll just tear out that one and toss in the new, because I can't repair a trans if my life depended on it:) I opened 1 up once....It never got put back together. I do understand that this is front wheel drive and I believe this will be quite a bit of work beings his tranny is on the drivers side and there's alot of stuff that will have to come off just to get to it. I've had some of this stuff off on the last fix, not fun.

I don't know who to suggest to call for quotes though. Any Ideas in that area Robbie??
 
I'm really not sure on a local basis. We use a bunch of different vendors all over the country but nobody local. There is a salvage yard here in St. Charles that I know does sell them and install them, Midwest Recyclers. I've known the owner for 20 years or more. He the S.O.B. that got me into this rotten business! :) The other is to check is some independent shops. A lot of them have sources you just are not sure of what you're getting if you don't know them. The actual trans is common as dirt, they're all over. Make sure you get the right one though, There are codes on the side of the trans you have to match to get the right gear ratio for the electronics in the car to work right.
 
Okay after leaving syburgs last night with the car. I was making a hard left and the car sounded like I hit something, and was dragging it till I straighten out the wheel. It did it 3 times after that and I have checked and there is nothing under there?

It is only on Hard Left hand turns.

Could it be the CV Joint and would that have anything to do with my Transmission issues as well?
 
Also my wife informed me then, that the car did it to her 2 weeks ago about when The other problems started with the trany.
 
i would get it to a tranny shop. a cv joint will make popping noises when turning. but i doubt it has anything to do with it not shifting. i am no tranny man but i would say it is something in the tranny causing all your problems. It may have a bearing out and the metal shavings are getting places and causing more problems. i would get it into a tranny shop have them pull the pan and see if there is anything in the pan. I would say if it is making noises like that i doubt it is a sensor.
 
my dad has the same car one year newer and his does that also, without the draging noise. i think since its automatic the sensores pick when to shift so if your on a sunday drive then the shift points are lower for fuel economy, then if you get on it more the trany shifts a little higher in the revs, and if you really get on the gas the shift pionts will be almost redline. im not a mechanic im just stateing my dads car does the same thing.
 
does the car shift before it hits the rev limiter? if not it is definatly something wrong. It will change the shift points the harder you get on it, but that is the same for any tranny not just electronic ones.
 
No it does not red line.. Its like it hits a govenor and will not let it go up any higher on the RPM intill it shifts.

I just had the Transmission pan off changing the Filter (Is this the pan you are talking about) And they said it look fine, oil was a little dirty, but they said it really it was not that bad.
