OT: Dart Frogs

Be careful handling them, they are extremely poisonous! If you need more info, contact Ocean Design, then have a lot of them. It's worth stopping by to see the set-ups they keep them in!

Pets as gifts are always a really bad idea...

lol that is one subject I actually know a lot about. If you need help with any of them just pm me. So far I own a couple you if you even want to check it out you can swing by, as soon as I finish with remodeling my basement.

Unless I'm mistaken........ Captive dart frogs lose their poisen due to the fact that it is derived from their natural diet.

Just somthing you may want to look into.

You are correct, it is my understanding they are harmless. I have done a lot of research into them, I just wasn't expecting them lol. We have lots of pets (more than most people on here unless you have a farm) so what is one more(my wife works for a vet).

I have a poison dart frog. Lov'em, cant wait to get him a buddy. I want to get one of the frogs that secret the hallucinagenic substance. We can have a blacklite frog licking party!

:smokin:

I really should of attended more classes in college.

Hey Drew, cool lookin' frog. I used to keep frogs too :). They do lose their poison in captivity, so if this is a captive bred specimen, then you should not have a problem. If you are looking for more of these or related items, there is a reptile/amphibian swap at the DuPage county fairgrounds. It is held twice a month and the next one is on this upcoming Saturday. The have all different kinds of Dart frogs and Mantellas. The swap used to be held in Streamwood, but it recently moved to the DuPage Fairgrounds. If you want more info on it just ask.

hansnfrans

is the reptile / amphibian show still on this weekend? Is there a website or any other details you have? thanks

The link to the website for the Reptile Show is:

http://allanimalexpo.com/

It used to be called Lee Watson's Reptile Swap and was held at Cross Wind Farms in Streamwood. There are alot of the same vendors that show up to the new show that originally came for the Lee Watson show. HTH.

yankeereefer- As far as I know, the show is still on for this Saturday (tomorrow). My friend is goin' there to pick up a pair of Sugargliders :). Those lil' flyin' rodents rock! Check 'em out when you're there, the guy who sells them will let you hold them, it's pretty cool.

Sugar Gliders have been known to make terrible pets. They are kind of hard to keep and need lots of room. :)

My friend has got a cage for them that has a 30" x 18" footprint and is 54" tall. Hopefully it is large enough. He is also buying 2 of them b/c they are pretty "needy" animals and do better in pairs if you can't carry them around with you all day. Hopefully it works out okay for the lil' furry guys.

A kid that I went to school with, would bring his sugar glider with him everywhere he went (including all of his classes). He wore a hooded sweatshirt and the sugar glider just lived in the hood part :).

A little info on the poison, in case you care or are as big of a dork as me: The poison they produce is called curare...a potent (temporary) paralytic...used in the hospital (vancuronium, atracuronium) all the time, especially on people on ventilators since is paralyzes your diaphragm making it easier for the vent to control your breathing; Subsequently suffication is how you die from the poison (cant breath because diaphragm is paralyzed). I remember reading a long time ago that tribe in South America dipped there arrowheads in the poison, hit prey and just follow till the animal fell over...

more than you ever wated to know i am sure...
sorry, that is like 2 min of your life you will never have back :)
