I know there are quite a few divers in the club.

Stacy, Sierra and I will be diving Monterey this weekend. If anyone would like to join us - you're more than welcomed to. We are leaving Saturday morning (diving Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning). We will be shore (Breakwater?) diving and practicing skills. Anyone who wants to join is more than welcomed to. If you are interested - just drop me a PM.

I suppose it might be nice. Water is Cold all year round. You will need a decent ~7mm thick wet suit. I don't suppose the storms we've had up here have mucked things up too bad down there yet. Visibility can get down to nil in the winter and spring due to storms stiring up the base. I've not dived in so long that I would love to go just to get brushed up on the procedures. Last I dove was Belize almost two years ago. Only dove with my swim shorts (dive gear too.) Computer said it was 72F even at 100 ft. Loved it!

Hey Minh

I'd like to go but I'm pretty busy with the MARS BOD turnover. Once things calm down I'm in.

Knowing you, I'll bet you already checked the weather and tide conditions. If not, try www.WeatherUnderground.com. They have a good tide condition display. You won't get greened out (algae) too much this time of year but the tides can muck it up.

David - the water temps range between 47 and 57 pretty much all year round.

Hey Brian,

Glad to have you along whenever you want to go. The weather should be clear. Swell model shows that it will be around 8 ft - which isn't good or bad. Visibility will be hard to determine and vary greatly. I was at Pt Lobos last month, and the vis was about 1 ft in the cove but about 20 ft at the mouth of the cove.

Water temperature is pretty constant around 50-55. At this time of the year, it's not the water temperature that is the concern - but the air temperature. During the surface interval - it's really easy to get extremely cold. A lot of people are colder during the surface interval than during the actual dive. Fortunately - Stacy and I both dive drysuits, so the surface interval is nice and warm. :D

Oh My!

I was stationed in Guam for 3 years in the early 90's and dove the Marianas Trench. That place is the bomb. I spent so much money on diving gear. I sold all my equipment when i left. I would love to do it again, but i find myself spending un-godly amounts of money on this hobby. Maybe in the near future ill get back into it. Have fun. Take good pics for us man, and BE SAFE! See Ya!

pcurry18 - I know what you mean about spending an "un-godly amounts." I used to think reef keeping was expensive - but now realize how cheap it is compared to diving.

We've been having very large storm swells here in Santa Cruz. The coast has been pretty turned up the last two days. If the winds blow (upwelling) it may clear up for you.

Well - we dove breakwater today. There was suppose to be five of us diving. Sierra decided not to dive before we even left for Monterey. We have a policy with Sierra that she can call any dives she is uncomfortable with and there will be no consequences. Better to have someone not dive than a nervous person as a dive buddy. Two friends met us a Breakwater around noon. They ended not diving because the husband's rental BCD did not fit properly. Stacy (wife) and I decided to get into the water to practice some basic skills. As far as I could see, we we the only divers entering the water. I probably should have taken that as some sort of omen.

The waves were hitting the base of the stairs at Breakwater. Entry was a little more difficult than normal because of the larger than normal waves. I thought this was good (Stacy differs) because it allowed us to practice a little rougher entrance. Once we were in the water - the visibility was a blurry 5ft with very little surge underwater. We saw very little marine life (besides snails and few small flounders). We were able to practice some basic skills (I still need more practice on navigation). Getting out of the water was a little more difficult than usual. Because of the waves, Stacy got banged up pretty good on some rocks during the entry. But once again I am glad that we were able to practice in less than ideal but manageable condition. Total UW time was about 35 minutes. We decided to skip the second dive (my wife was whipped from the exit) and cancel our dive on Sunday. Went out to late lunch with our friends, and headed home.

Overall - not a great day for diving, but I don't regret going either. Got to spend some time with the family and some friends. If next weekend swell model looks good - I might head down for a day of diving.

PS - if anyone every want to practice is Folsom Lake - let me know.

dude, I'm in for folsom, jess' brother would probably go too, we need to get back in the water before we get too rusty!
Let me know as soon as you plan something so I can get the rental stuff set up :P at this point local stuff is better to get really comfortable.
