OT: DIY Topsy Turvy

Has anyone bought one of these?

I grow my own herbs but was thinking of building one of these for vegetables. The thing is I dont like the design of the chute very much (the print they used on the chute i think is kind of tacky) so I wanted to make my own which I dont think would be too difficult.

But I was wondering if there was anything I might be missing. I figured I could just buy a potter and drill a hole in the bottom and then hang it. But something tells me its not quite that simple.....there has to be something to prevent the water from dripping out and something else to hold the dirt and the roots of the plant in.

Any ideas? Thanks.

i dont understand why someone would want a tomato plant upside down? I grow my herbs hydroponically, thats a good diy

We recently got a topsy turvy and the tomato plant is bending up trying to grow up. It has only been a few days. My wife started the plants from seeds. We put two seedlings in one topsy turvy. The weigh quite a bit when all the soil is in. I agree the print is kinda tacky. We did one with peppers also. The new one I just saw on TV has 4 holes in the sides and a stand for it to hang from. Seems like it would work better from the sides.

How does that work?

The only reason id want them upside down is because the place im moving to doesnt have much patio space so I'd like to hang it.

Thanks Ocean,
I found this link earlier:

Maybe Ill drill holes in the side of the bucket......could work.

with hydros you can do it inside. JUst like aquarium plumbing basically a closed loop. I never built one, just baught one for a science project but it looks easy.
