OT Drill press opinions

Savings, Yeah. I went over there for the $1.99 hole saw set one day. Talk about getting sucked in LOL I left with well over $100 in bits, hand tools, clamps, air nailer, etc etc... Saved a bundle huh?? Best part, I was buying the hole saws as a back up to the set I already had! Oh well, can't have too many tools and it was fun!

I am not sure about table sws and that sort of thing, but who makes most of the Craftsman stuff? Isn't it Black and Decker?

If that is the case, I know that their hand held power tools came out of the same factory that made Dewalt, which is a much pricier brand. Same factory, same people making them, just a different color and different price.

not sure about now but a few years ago Ryobi made craftsmen drills and such (used to sell hardware there.)

The 3rd party makes them to Craftsman/Sears spec. Emerson, King Sealy, Atlas, Walker Turner, etc. have all at one time or another made things for Sears. However, in a move to cut prices and increase profits, they started making things cheaper and cheaper. It started in the early to mid-80's (manuf by Emerson serial number prefix 113) and got progressively worse. It's not a reflection on Emerson - they're just building them the way Sears told them to. In fact, after Sears dumped them for Ryobi(??? I think) they started making Ridgid's stuff which has gotten good reviews.

It may have turned around but I'm pretty much set as far as tools go so I don't read review much anymore.

and its a drill press, not a table saw...you probably wont lose any fingers in a drill press

You haven't seen me build things yet :)

emerson contract was cancelled because they where using the machinery that sears owned to make stuff for home depot.... at least thats what they told us.

http://www.riverfronttimes.com/Issues/2002-10-16/news/feature.html

Since the 1960s, the Paris factory produced Craftsman power and bench tools for Sears, Roebuck and Company, one of the nation's top retailers. But in 1997, Sears wanted better terms from Emerson; otherwise, it'd turn to cheaper foreign manufacturers and workers to produce its brand-name tools. The abrupt announcement appeared to signal the end of the line for the plant -- the second time in the '90s that closing seemed imminent.

But Knight and other top execs at the St. Louis-based industrial giant found a new partner in Home Depot, the Atlanta-based home-improvement powerhouse. Emerson proposed launching a new line of bench-top and stationary power tools exclusive to Home Depot. The new tools, similar to those made for Sears, would be sold under the Ridgid brand name. Home Depot jumped at the opportunity -- and soon, Ridgid tools were rolling off the same assembly lines where Craftsman products used to appear.

...

The reason things went smoothly, Sears alleges in a recent lawsuit, is that Emerson stole equipment, drawings and other intellectual property in order to do the Home Depot deal. Emerson denies the charge.

I have heard from several people that supossedly know, black and decker and sears are "sleeping together" on hand power tools, drills, jig saws and stuff like that. Over all I just don't think the craftsman power tools are what they used to be at all. I own a Rigid Jointer and table saw and I bought them because I felt the quality was there and a vey reasonable price. I looked at $1200 table saws on down. I liked the Rigid the best of the units I looked at.
