The California Capital Air Show was in town this weekend. I shot almost 1800 images and am still picking my way through them. I'm normally a landscape shooter, and that's what my gear is targeted for, but I had a lot of fun shooting this event.

Before the actual show started they had the F-22A come out and do some warm-ups. Here are some images from that:

I have a Photoshop action that I use to create the frame.

Just google for "photoshop framing action"

Thanks!

I was using my 70-200 4L with a 1.4 converter all day. That gave my f/5.6 wide open so I had to bump the ISO to keep the shutter speeds up. IS would've been a big help.

I'm hoping to pick that lens up in just a few weeks! I've really battled which one of the 7-2's to get, 4 IS, or 2.8 non-IS or the 4 non-IS. Was really looking at the 4 IS but after getting realistic with myself and my budget I think the 4 non-IS is getting more set in every day :D. I've seen some amazing pictures out of it! Now this just gets me more excited! ;)

95% of what I shoot is landscapes, from a tripod. For that kind of shooting I'm almost always above f/8 and IS does me no good so I didn't spend the money for it. The big difference between the 2.8 and the 4 is size and weight. To get to 2.8 they include a lot more glass.

:D I've seen side by sides of the 4L and the 2.8...numbers don't seem much but there is a big difference in size there! Most of my shooting is animals so IS is a marginal thing - you have to have your shutter speeds up there anyway to freeze movement although IS can still help in some cases. Its a tough decision! I know some people who have both a 4 and 2.8 copy just because of the size/weight difference.

Nice picks, I used to go to the Weymouth Naval Air show
I was there the 2nd day in a row, same show basically
They did the a slow turn with 5 planes as the announcer went thru the plane & capabilities
I had my back to the 5 planes, vidoe taping in the opposite direction. The teenagers that were in front of me said I was facing the wrong way!! THE PLANES are BEHIND YOU!!
I just smiled as the plane speeding from the opposite direction of the 5 planes came in at treetop level to buzz the crowd filled my viewfinder.
BOOM! as it went overhead!!
I think everybody ducked except me

Number 5 looks to be the best the jet wash look pretty cool, the others look a little soft probably cause of the 1.4 extender ( been there done that) 100-400 MM great lens for shooting aviation. The 70 -200MM great lens, just dosent reach out enough .Helpful hint for aircraft...... specially fast aircraft Av mode F.8 depending on the skies adjust ISO accordingly should do you right keeping it as low as possible for minimum noise. The pic below shot at F.8 1/320th ISO 100 in crappy skies just an example.

WOW!!

The "cloud" in the first and last picture.....that's the sound barrier being broken, isn't it?
That would be a " vapor cone"
