After years of looking we finally found some land in the country to build our house. It is 60 acres near La Porte city with trees, a stream, and pasture. Now as soon as we get our house sold we can start building the new one. The best part will be the 34 foot long 3000 gallon system that will be the centerpiece of the basement. Needless to say I didnt get much sleep last night!

Congrats man! Can't wait until I get to start looking for some land!

So do you want me to start welding that stand for you now or do you want to at least break ground first! :D

yeah like trying to remember where you got the dip waverz. lol my wife is trying to find it as we speak.

I think I will have a structural engineer design the stand. JK We will have to have a club meeting the day I need to tip it over to install the glass. I am more excited about building the tank then the house to tell the truth.

Wenzoo, sorry i didnt get back to ya, i dont do the shopping round here so i had to ask the ole lady. Apparently she gets it at hy-vee.

Good luck.

thank you

No will definetely be a reef tank. I am hooked on coral for life now. With that many gallons, area, & that large of an eco system I am hoping to add as many different species of both coral & fish that I can. And yes I may be a little crazy.

So it's going to be 34' long, what are the other dimensions going to be?

34' = 408" x 41" x 41" calculates to be 2969 gallons? You'll need scuba gear to get in that thing!

And let's see, you'll probably need 400 watters at least if not 1000 watters to reach the bottom of that sucker at 41" deep. So 17 400 watt halides (figuring 1 every 2 foot)

Man I hate to even think what your utility bill will be! $$$$

Maybe you can rig up some sort of giant hamster wheel outside that your kids can run on and generate electicity!

I guess you did say theres a creek, maybe dam the sucker up and use that to generate some juice!

Good luck man that will def. be sweet when you're done. Get the plans drawn up and we'll start melting some steel! :D

How the heck are you gonna light that? I can't even imagine the bulb replacement and utility expense

light rails would be choice for that size tank.

This is the thread I have gotten my ideas from.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=716410

As far as lighting I was going to use some strip lights so the whole thing is lit from 6am to 9 pm. Then I would have a set of large MH on a rail that took the whole day to go from one end to the other.

As far as utilities. There will be no gas going to the house, everything will be electric. There will be a back up generator installed inline. Will have a large wood buring stove as there is a ton of wood laying around. We are also looking at geo thermal for heating & cooling. Possibly down the road possibly an elec generating windmill or solar panels.

The size I am thinking will be 408 x 36 x 36. The trough on the back would run the entire length & be 12 x 18. The trough will have a deep sand bed with a ton of cheato, paint brushes, mangroves, and caulerpa. This will not only help on the export of nutrients, but give a place for pods to grow as well as food for all the tangs I will have. Then probably 3 100 gallon sumps.

I am definetly going to need help from everyone on here. I realized on the tank tour that everyone has some really good ideas & I want to use as many of them as I can. The nice thing is that I am still at least a year and a half away so I can still do lots of research.

Did you ever consider the sky light or suntube route? Did you ever see Richard Harkers 2000G tank in "Coral"?

No i havent, can you post a link? I was going to look into suntubes. Skylights are out since it is a basement tank. I dont want 12 tons upstairs.

I don't think either one of those would be very feasable being that it would be in the basement.

Have you considered making the tank out of concrete? It might be easier to do it that way. Just have them poor it when they poor the rest of the foundation. I think that's how "mr4000" tank was built. He had a 4000 gallon tank. You may want to find his thread and do some reading up on it for some ideas. His house basically rotted away from all the humidity. I believe he said if he were going to do it again he would basically make the tank a totally seperate part of the house to keep the moisture isolated.

Are you planning on it being an inwall tank or will you have it just up against the wall? Also will it just be straight or are you going to have it go around a corner and be "L" shaped?

When you need help getting this bad boy started let me know I'll be there in a heart beat I wouldn't miss helping with this monster for anything!

Your going to have to make that stand out of structural steel I beams theres no way that any type of wood will hold that for a long period of time.........you should definetly rethink the size or get ahold of paletta and have him help you......the guy has set up over 150 large tanks he talked about it saturday(great speech) he;s got his ducks in a row and would have a great check list of things you will need to do to make it a sound project that will last 50 or 60 plus years......with that much weight and pressure you want to do it right the first time. I would hate to have the neighbor kid tap the glass and get a 3000 gal bath....unless you don't like the neighbors...LOL
