Mountain Madness - My full floor reno's with 300 gallon centrepiece.

I took this video yesterday morning as the lights were just starting to come on. Amazing sweepers.

Cool. What is close to the brain that seems to be irritating it?

Dave.M

I've seen this in my own and it was proximity to LPS corals. It extended sweepers about 6-8" which amazed me as I had previously only seen about 1/2" extension at max. Even more amazing was the kill rate... everything that the brain touched would die. I had a bunch of LPS frags on the sand so I'm guessing it was the increased slime production. My guess anyway. If these corals are all coming from QT it could be the same reason as they were just transferred. Was the brain in the same QT tank?

Not sure. I had two Open Brains near it that it almost killed in QT. Moved them and they have grown back nicely.

My exact observations. Potent stings on the two Open Brains. Nothing near it now. I have added Apex Lunar Lights and module and the corals are all fired up at night now.

Time to finally install the Reef Genesis. It seems slightly daunting (at least they way I want it installed). Mixing station is in the garage, so the Eheim pump won't have the power to supply water from the reservoir. I am still researching which pump to use. I need a pump that can deliver 1 gallon per minute to the Metering Reservoir at the required head and that draws less than 2.5A continuously. I have done basic calculations of head pressure and I am thinking a Mag 3 will work nicely. Once I have it fully installed, I will see what I really need.

Slow going tonight but made some progress. Bins are up but wiring is all torn apart again. Sensors/float switches and pumps need to be added. Holes need to be drilled in the counter. Panduit needs to be installed horizontally along the countertop, and all the plumbing. Thats just inside. Outside I need to get the holding tanks ready as well.

The walls are too high and the stairs get in the way with ladders, so we had to rent scaffolding. When we scrape the ceiling it will be a necessity.

1980's style fan removal. Kind of sketchy ladder use, bought I got it done.

Good luck with the popcorn removal. Just hoping you don't run into the issues I did - I've just had to get a guy to do about $10k of work to remove the popcorn ceilings and fix up the ceiling drywall on a ~2400 sqft house - would have done it myself but for the normal technique isn't working cause they sprayed it on to hide water damage to the drywall, also sprayed it on to bare drywall (which makes it impossible to remove and so you have to scrape it and skim coat instead), and for the coup d'etat managed to mix paint in with the drywall which again makes it nearly impossible to remove. ;) Heres hoping the soap water approach works - can highly recommend plastic drop cloth over the floor/walls just to contain the ridiculous amount of mess it produces (going 'Outbreak' level is not overdoing it my experience).

Loving how the tank looks though with the LPS - thats an amazing brain (my wife is jealous - so looks like I'll be getting one).

Is that the best placement of those two containers?

Just asking.

Yes it looks sketchy. As much as I don't think they will leak, I was going to have a tray with a bulkhead fitting in the middle just below it. That fitting would be plumbed direct to the drain. I still haven't decided if I am going to leave them there or put them in the garage over the mixing station.

Just finished unpacking some items for the tank.

I bought my Ozone setup. I know there is debate about its use by some hobbyists, but I have used it for a long, long time. In the past, I have always used it in my skimmers. The only problem I have ever encountered has been a decrease in skim mate. This time, I am taking a different approach and using a reactor.

I have purchased the following:
  • Octopus OR-150 Ozone Reactor
  • Ozotech Poseidon 220 Black Edition Ozonizer
  • Ozotech IQ-20 Auto Air Dryer.

In the past, I have always used desicant beads in a tube as an air dryer. I would have to frequently bake them in the oven to dry them out. The auto dryer should eliminate that. I still need to figure out an air pump as the dryer needs a vacuum to pull the air through. I will be doing a little more research.

I also decided to replace my 36 watt Coralife UV Sterilizer. I purchased an Aqua UV Classic 120 watt w/wipers. I originally was looking at an 80 watt but I got the most unbelievable deal on this.

I have the Abyzz 400 pump arriving in a couple of days. I have decided to put the UV and transformer on the wall in the fish room. The Abyzz will pump up to the UV, out to the garage and through the chiller. Return from the chiller will be direct to the tank. I want to avoid looping the sumo through the chiller.
I have also purposely put the chiller out in the garage to keep excess heat out of the house. I do have room for it inside but I don't think that is the most efficient use of it.

Looks like a quality gear list :) I also am giving the thumbs up for the panduit you have in the last pic! I used the medium width and wish I would have went with the widest option, the cables add up quickly and take up all of the space.

Ozone Setup

Ozone Setup

Hey there. I had purchased the exact same ozone setup you have. I've run into an issue with the reactor pulling through enough air to pull the ozone into it.

Have you setup your ozone system yet? Curious as to whether or not you're getting the draw through.

I'm thinking I'll need to integrate some sort of air pump. Maybe a Y airline fitting to push some air into the lines somewhere along the way.

Let me know if you want to share ideas!

Hello, beautiful setup so far. I'm over in Vancouver (Mackenzie Heights) and am in the process of restarting my tank. We were in Hawaii and lost power. I had battery backups, but not enough, so I lost everything :(
Anyway, I'm now getting some quotes on tanks. Who made yours? I'm currently speaking with Miracles, but wouldn't mind hearing about a few other options if there are any good ones. Also, do you get your stock from J&L?

Hey guys been super busy.

the cables add up quickly and take up all of the space.

No kidding! I am doing a bunch of cable management in there right now and it is a painstaking job to make it look right.

I had correspondence with Ozotech. This is what they said. "When using an air pump with this system you should connect the outlet of the desiccant air drier to the inlet of the air pump and the out let of the air pump to the inlet of the ozone generator. And do not allow the pumping pressure to be any greater than 2 PSI."
I have bought an air pump and will be working on a setup hopefully next week.

Cant stress enough how awesome it is to have a back-up generator. If you can swing it I would opt for one. Easy sell to your significant other too! When the powers gone and they stay warm with all the conveniences that are happy!

My tank was built three years ago in Calgary by a guy around for awhile. Terrible customer service. I pulled it out of my office as we are leaving that facility. There is a relatively new popular builder in Calgary right now. I would search them up. Cant remember the name off hand.

This is the cable management I am now tasked with. :eek1:

It will look good when I am done but oh boy it looks like a mess right now. The problem is every time you change something you are forced to pull it apart. Its easier to just leave apart until it is all installed.

Lots more work completed on the main level.
Living room gutted and ceiling work underway here. Scraping all the stipple off the ceiling and running new wiring is not the easiest task. It involves drilling multiple 4 inch holes around the ceiling to gain access to start running wires. When the cable is run, secure in place, then patching the holes.

Remember this ugly door? Living up here I wanted to keep with the West Coast mountain theme. I am inspired by the nature and wanted to have our entry be something spectacular. I had a local craftsman build these solid wood doors from scratch. Another local artisan glass company has finished the glass with etching and glass carving so they are 3 dimensional instead of just a flat etching. The doors will be finished in a dark espresso stain.
