OT: Fishing and camping at Castaic last weekend...

but I was more questioning it because of some law suit I heard about... .

The only law suit that I know of is the one regarding the Steelhead. The DFG was not allowed to stock any lakes or rivers that could in any way come in contact with waters that might have Steelhead. The tree huggers don't want the stockers to mingle with the natives.

at least you didn't pay close to a 100 bucks a night to camp in Irvine lake.
Freshwater in socal in general is tough. You really have to be in the know, with other fishermen, forums, etc. to have an okay chance at getting some fish. Lower lagoon in casty is known primarily for bass fishing, not for trout or anything else. If you really want to catch fish at castaic i would suggest hiring a guide and go slay some stripers!

Ya, when my guy and I go without the kids, we're in it for bass and stripers... but with the kids, we fish the lower lake for the convenience really and mainly just for trout and bluegill at the small pier. My kids can barely pull in a half pounder, let alone anything over a pound lol. I'd be buying new poles every week if I let either of my kids attempt to pull in the bass at castaic... haha.

Here's a few of our catch from castaic the last few trips...

No PS. I just prefer my fishing and relaxation trips to have nice surroundings. The reservoirs created around here are just big puddles in otherwise pretty bleak looking areas.

This campground is for other people. We always stay in a motel in the valley and eat in restaurants. Kids are all gone so it's great now.

Ya, I personally only liked Castaic because honestly, it was cheap, the sites were close to the lakes, and convenience of the town nearby... Places like Caspers Wilderness in San Juan is more like my kind of camping though... No lake for fishing though, it's more of a wilderness/hiking type of place. There's a wilderness recreation center for the kids and much more "naturey" than any other places I've camped. You can hike for miles, see deer and other animals, and they even have an equestrian campground so there's always horses around for the kids too...

Oh, and my youngest is 6 so it'll be a while before we get any sort of full on adult fun lol...

Anyway, ya we had fun regardless... Just thought it was insane with all the cops around... I camp at O'Neill and Caspers several times every year and have never had this happen... It was... different.

These are local community parks where 99% of the people that visit are locals. Castaic is MUCH different. These are more "regional" parks that draw folks from all over the SoCal/LA area. Thus, there is a much greater chance of some gang-bangers showing up to get wasted.

Hotel camping is definitely one of the good things that happens when you get old. Two people can live pretty cheap if you limit you restaurant visits to dinner only.
