OT - Fishing for food around here?

Hey all,

Havign been a vegetarian for 14 years, I was considering reintroducing seafood into my diet for health reaons. With that said, I was also wondering if anyone knew of any spots that are decent for catching a decent meal around here. I'm looking mainly at ocean fish, not sure what exactly since I havent been fishing for years, nor have I eaten seafood for years, but I figure if I start slow and catch my own food, id have a better chance of mentally and physically preparing myself for a new menu item.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!
Luis

Mosquito Lagoon is fabulous. Although we catch and release, you can easily catch a week's worth of meals in a day's fishing. Trout are plentiful in the flats on both the lagoon side and Indian River side of the Haulover Canal. Red fish, snapper, drum, sheepshead and even sometimes snook can be caught from off shore or from a boat. I've even seen a tarpon pulled out of there. Be very cautious about measuring and knowing the limits as FWC is very active there and cooler checks are very common. There is a really nice sand bar that extends out on the Indian River side that is great for wading. To the right of the sandbar are grass flats. We've pulled some 24+ inch trout from there. Good luck, and bring insect repellent!!! Mosquito Lagoon certainly lives up to its name!

Thanks for the advice. I am not too concerned with taking too much or measuring... I have a very active conscious when it comes to respecting this decision and I realize everything I need to take into consideration. :) It is still very tough for me to actually do, however I do need to try something as my health has declined tremendously in the two years I've lived here.

Thanks for all of the advice and keep the suggestions coming!

My husband has been a vegetarian for over 25 years, but does include seafood and occasionally, for the past year or two, turkey in his diet. Hope you feel better soon. Marcye

I've been to Sebastian and it is setup perfectly for fishing- what you will catch depending on weather, wind, tide etc though is beyond me. I was there once and it was SO windy we could barely cast out!

I really look forward to going again in the next few weeks as It'll be a bit warmer and hopefully not so windy. I'm used to Gulf of Mexico waters so this whole Atlantic Ocean thing really freaks me out sometimes!

The best caught fish I've had to eat - Snook (holy cow) i'd say some of the best fish you can get. Snapper and Sheepshead are good but I find them to be a little boney- just gotta be thourough when cleaning them. I find trout to have a little bit of a fishy flavor for some reason.. not sure if its me or the fish hehe. I'm not sure if you get them on the east coast but Flounder are also delicious and Amberjack if they'd come into the passes here. I've had some from the gulf with a little teriyaki on the grill? heaven!

If you're looking for fresh fish for your diet and are a little uneasy about how long fish has been in the store etc (not sure if you want fresh or just also enjoy fishing) there's a neat little fish market in Winter Park that has a lot of really nice fresh stuff as well.

If you ever want hit me up for some recipes I love most fish but admittedly get most of mine from the supermarket these days. I know Marcye does catch and release but if I ever have the chance to catch a nice dinner again I'd be happy :) When I was growing up we didn't have a lot of money so when Mom didn't know what to make it was either hop in the boat and go to the grocery store or "Hey Christie think you can catch dinner?"

pretty weird eh?
