OT Global Warming

this is a hot one...somehow we are handling both sides civilly

I am on the side that does not believe in Al Gore's crap about global warming

the earth's time frame should be measured in millions of years, not hundreds or even thousands...what's gonna happen in 23 million years when the next ice age comes?...all of the people are gonna be saying "see I told you to burn more coal"

edit: oh yeah, ib4tl

We may have improved some things here but in developing nations and China, it's a different story. It's definitely a global problem vs. a US problem.

aggreed which is why I thought it was a funny thing when the rest of the world made a huge deal when we refused to sign the kato accord.

That is exactly what I was trying to say. We have already improved what our past generation has messed up...and if you want to believe some reports, cow farts are more to blame than our cars
You misunderstood me, I meant, it is the way we behaved the last 150 years, that is causing the Earth to change.
Call it global warming call it mother nature is ticked off, call it what you want but something is happening and it is not good.
As for cow farts, belive it or not they are needed just like in the past dinosaurs farts ,now all these farts mix with al the other chemicals an pollution, now that is bad ;)

The person in the interview was stating that plants that previously only survived in the south are now doing just fine in New Jersey. Quite the difference.

I'm in Jersey and the Cherry blossom trees are starting to bloom. This usually doesn't happen until mid Spring. As well it was 74 here this past Saturday.

I have to agree, we may only be looking at the past 150 years, but those 150 years are different from all of the rest to date. So to compare them is very difficult, what we are doing to the environment must be having an effect at some level. Then again it may not be and soon we will all have beach front property!

I hate topics like this but remember the Earth has gone through many more catastrophic events than global warming which has happened before and will happen again. The events that led to the extinction of dino's was far more catastrophic than the temp rising which it has done numerous times before as well as cooling off. Consider for a moment the extinction event...all that decaying mass and the toxins released from it had to have wreaked havoc on our protective layers and the pollution caused by it far more destructive than what we have done in the past 150 years. The planet recovered and adapted.

I am not advocating going out and polluting the planet but I am trying to put it into perspective. Sensationalism doesn't help solve problems it causes knee jerk reactions. Gore has always liked shock value because it causes people to stop thinking. That is why he invented the internet. LOL

Note to those who like to report political posts, I am not a proponent of either party and choose qualifications over anything else.

sirreal63, this does not have to be political at all, this is something related to and afects ore hobby.
True in the past there has been more catastrophic disasters... and do you remember what happened?
Most inhabitants on earth disappeared , now as advanced as we are compared to those days, why be like a ostrich and stick ore heads in a hole and pretend the the danger will go away?
Look something is wrong, it mite not be global worming at all but obviously some thing is happening, so why risk it?
If Gore is wrong so be it but if he is wright, then it is a hefty price to pay for not listening.

:)

I didn't view it as a political post but things tend to go downhill fast on RC. Yes most life was wiped out and eventually came back. One thing I know is we will not be able to stop what is happening. Whether we like it or not we are here for the ride, even if we had some impact in creating it. If there is magical device to alter time and shape the future then I am sure Gore will invent it.

The danger will not go away but with as many groups of people as there are around the world we will not be able to stop it. The best we can hope for is to slow it down.

Yes, the Earth has natural climatic cycles. Yes, it’s possible we're just on the warmer end of one.

but......................

The greenhouse effect is scientifically proven, and CO2 is the major contributor. Atmospheric CO2 is at record levels on a geologic time scale. The fossil fuels that we burn (coal, oil, and natural gas) store carbon that took millions of years for the earth to sequester naturally. We have released and continue to release this carbon in the blink of an eye geologically speaking, a couple hundred years. The planet cannot sequester it fast enough to keep up. Thus, we have a net amount of CO2 and global warming.

The difference between this natural climatic cycle and ones previously is that we are contributing to it and most likely accelerating it.

It is likely that even if we were to stop releasing CO2 entirely today the Earth would continue to warm. Think again of a green house. Say you built one and then stopped maintaining it. It would continue to stand and warm the environment inside, but eventually it would deteriorate, glass would break, the structure would fail and it will eventually lose its ability to warm the environment inside. It could just take a long time depending on how well the green house was built. That’s why we need to stop improving our green house now.

Most people choose to ignore a problem that doesn’t have a simple answer and is not yet affecting them. There is no easy answer to global warming but we will see action in the near future. There have been major advances in carbon sequestration technology, which basically means pumping CO2 (mostly from coal fired power plants) deep into the ground where it originated. The problem is that the energy industry hasn’t been given the proper governmental push required to ensure change However, most of our fossil fuel based CO2 originates from automobiles, and no one can argue which country is number one in petroleum consumption per capita. In 2005 the US consumed nearly 25% of the world’s petroleum production. We like our big cars.

The fact is global warming is real and our actions contribute to it. The question is, how much will it really effect us and do I give a $@!#.

I do.

Nick

I would agree...and excellent points Nick...and obviously all of us in this hobby care about the species we house and their mother land. My only point is let's not forget that this planet has undergone many changes throughout time and will continue to do so. Mankind is not the first or the last to affect changes on the planet and the solution is not an easy one. Changes in temperature, salinity and pollution are not new...it has happened over and over since the beginning of time.

Nothing would please me more than to see an answer to this problem in my lifetime but I am a realist and know it probably won't happen. I care too but I also know there are some people with influence who take on the "sky is falling" attitude to foster their own ambitions with little regard to the real issues. Sadly that trend will continue. What PCRF is doing is wonderful and will at least help. I got into this hobby knowing very little about corals as my experience with them was bleached pcs sitting on my mantle...relics to my high school days when that was the only corals we ever saw.

To me the bottom line is that the earth will survive and does not care if we do.

The earth will eventually cleanse itself of all pollutants ...including us.

Hey Capn...I bathe!!! :D

Let's get back to having fun and bring on the blondes!!!!!

You bathe eh?

Think maybe that's my problem? I just thought that you took all of the ladies and left none for me!

And HEY .... I worry about young guys like you and global warming. Don't want to see any more hair burned off of your head!:D

LOL...it isn't being burned off...it is being rubbed off. I never thought my growing forehead could be due to global warming...something to think about.

I think we need to change the subject to globule warming...and globule's come in pairs and can get chilled this time of year.

Yes I have issues.

I just hope my kid's children can enjoy the sun as much as we did. Without having to go outside wearing a protective UV suit.

Stay away from the blonds, most likely they dye their hair and use lots of hair spray , there for contributing to global worming
