OT: help choose major for college!

Theres no easy way to make a lot of $. With hard work and determination you can accomplish anything. You should do some careful thinking of what you want to major in. You do not want to be sitting behind a desk in a few years and be saying "I should have done something else".

Unless you have a passion for one of the few lifetime careers that requires a specific advanced degree (like being a doctor or a lawyer), chances are you will change careers and change your mind about what you like at least a few times. Or life kicks in and you HAVE to change.

What you pick as your major does NOT mean that's what you are going to do for the rest of your life. While it may sound like a huge critical decision to you right now, it isn't.

If you don't know what you want, select "Undeclared" for now and polish off the GE's. If you have to pick one right away pick a nice generic one like Business or English or Math. They provide a broad based education and, to an employer, will seem applicable to almost any job.

choose a major that is engaging and makes you want to learn more.

too bad porn is not a major, I would have love to get a degree in it.

Just pick something that pay enough to support this stupid reef hobby.:D

if you really don't know right now, go undeclared and finish your GEs first. Then declare a major. I think you should have 2 years to decide.

I would go with Criminal justic, once you graduated, get a job with government, great pay in that field and great pension when u retired.

sam: Ill be taking over the world when Im out of college.
If you have ambitions to control the world, try controlling a team of people first - it will take that ambition from you in a few days. Control fish - good, control people - bad...

No one will change my mind. I promised that to my grandma right before she passed right in front of me...

Ooo... no, what I meant was I would like to enter the business field and I will try and monopalize in what ever I try and do...Got you scared for a bit didnt I?

entrepreneur maybe, but I just try and do my own thing all the time, Ill probably have the college make me a specific field:smokin:

thanks everyone for their thoughts.. i know that everyone's saying that i should go for something that im into, the thing is im into those 3 fields.
the reason why i posted this thread was to find out what people thought about the fields and if they had any experience with it or if they know anyone that does.

but i was thinking of getting more into engineering because math is my strongest subject.

Architecture is in reality an art based major. Your career and income are going to de on a contract to contract basis. When I was studying architecture, an architect working for Octagon said:

If you aren't an alcoholic, you'll become one. NICE.

If architecture interests you, and you are good at math, take a look at Structural Engineering or Architecural Engineering.

You may also want to take a few hours and watch the National Geographic Channel, Food Channel, Discovery Channel, and Science Channel. When you find yourself saying, "Wow that person's job is dope!" research what that person does and how they got there.

:D

CSUF doesn't offer architecture does it?

I think you'd need to go civil or structural and then get your master's in arch.

PS-just because you are good at math doesn't mean you will find the career fulfilling. I never got less than an A in any of my math or physics prerequisites or any of the engineering classes. I just hated the people & the work sooooo much that I would kid my friends about preferring to suck on a shotgun than come to class!

Wayne is right-the first 3 years of engineering are brutal & the info is pretty outdated. The prof's are all olde timers from tenure back in the 60's so they aren't really even proficient on computers 90% of the time!!!

BTW- every happy engineer I've ever met quit engineering and opened their own business =)

In these times you by no means necessarily end up doing for a living what you envisioned when you got the degree. The job you'll end up doing may not even exist yet.

Get educated, that's the main thing. Read well, think sharply, study fast, and become mentally flexible. Make enough to have a few of the finer things but not so many they own you. Plus never forget how to enjoy yourself, because that's what you get out of it all.

i don't know about csuf, but i'm headed over to csulb. majoring in nursing. since the wait list is long and i don't have all the preqs yet, i'm doing a double major in something else. like marine biology. =)

defend your reef habit and become a marine biologist. it is one of the greatest things a reefer can do to keep peace in the home.

I'm an architect and love it. But you have to understand it's a couple of long days and nights probably once a month, and on top of that the money isn't amazing but it is good. You have to love designing and be a meticulous person or you want enjoy it. I have had probably 2/3 of my graduating class go off and do something else, like banking or 3d work. I know kinda odd but true, they thought they would love it but really didn't. GOOD LUCK
