What type of set up do you have now, Furnace wise ?
I assume standard Gas forced air. But what brand?

Usually one would go with the same brand for the AC Coil & outdoor unit.

I used to work for a "Trane" distributor. I'd recommend them most. However, I don't know what equipment(furnace wise) you already have.

If you've got "Trane", go with the same equipment for your AC.
Hopefully you've got a 90% furnace to add the AC stuff onto. Those are the most efficient. PVC right out of the house foundation.

I used to do side jobs with my friend Tim. But he's a 911 Opr. now and no longer in heating/cooling. I would not want to do a job without my HVAC tech freind. Been out of it too long. But I still have some connections. All in Rochester unfortunetly. But if you want I could make a call and see if this other guy I know wants a side job. & would consider your area.

I suggest you get a couple qoutes, then see what a "guy on the side" can get you ($) price wise. We used to get the equipment discounted at wholesale because we worked for the distributor in Rochester. But it had to be "Trane" stuff.

I'll tell you this for FYI:

HVAC Install & Service Companies make a "KILLING" on this stuff! What it really costs to do is amazing compared to what your charged. It's like a mechanic, electrician, or contractor of some sort. ALL in the hourly rate of Labor!
That's why, if you've got an honest friend that does it on the side. You'll save tons of money.

I once got a couple thousand dollar job done for no more than $800 including all equipment and labor.

thats crazy cheep $800 I dont think its possible and be up to code especially new. Materials are going to be over $300 for the elctrical part

I can do the electric for you but i need to stay away from the tank as well as any seafoods. I'll cut you a slammin price. I need to see the location to see how much work is involved.

thanks for the input guys. I have a forced air furnace. I was told today that it is far too powerful for my home and that I should downsize to save on energy. As for the AC I am pretty sure im going to go with sears. They are the cheapest so far and better quality units and warranties. although I do need to upgrade my breaker box i already have the box and the most of the breakers. If anyone thinks they can install it for a decent price lemme know. I would do it myself but my fiance isnt thrilled with the idea.

I'll agree most people may have a hard time getting as good a price as I got on that particular job. Like I said, I worked where we sold it all Wholesale and did not even buy it at the full wholsale price.

I got it discounted off that. (It was only the AC portion of the system) I already had furnace. Year 2000 outdoor unit never used(scratch n dent discount) but nearly perfect only a very minor dent- was like $489 discounted my price and the indoor Coil and parts (disconnect, copper line, etc...) I got for an additional $150. Gave my bud about $200 cash to help me do the job and (my employer at the time)- put a full warranty on it as well. (Roughly $800 for it all)

Units that did not get sold yet that were a couple years old or had minor handling damage, but fully functional- were discounted often to HVAC service companies and even much more to an employee of the company. It was a lot of these perfectly good and completely warrantable units and parts that were and still are used by guys on side jobs. Saving people money. But usually you have to be a friend (of someone) to get a deal like that worked out.

Who said it was Wards? (I Try to not drop names, to keep low profile)

Ok.. As I said, I'm not in the HVAC Supply Ind. any more.

But I do still know some people who are. That do some side jobs now & then.

(I've been in Corporate Safety & Logistics for a local high tech company for a few years now)

Srixon, Do I know you?
Or are you just familiar with HVAC industry locals and guessing?

I remember a Paul from Farmington that worked in Rochester. That wouldn't be you would it?

No....I deal mainly with the Canandaigua branch...and the name drop wasn't a bad thing...they are the only Trane distributer in Rochester and Syracuse.

I can tell ya one thing - prices have skyrocketed this year. We had AC installed in March, and the quotes were a good deal higher than the same time last year

Yep. You must have delt with Mark then. (Canadaigua Branch manager)

They are a great group of guys at all 3 branches.
Years ago, I worked for the owner, Terry in Rochester.
Doing a bit of everything.
Not a lot of businesses left like them. Well connected, Family-oriented, old style supplier that backs their stuff 100%.

Yeah, the "drop" is not bad. I'm just careful about names and other business getting mentioned specifically on here. Some people here, as well as certain Mods and ones depictions of the "rules"... caution against talking about too much of that stuff specifically. Especially when if by chance an argument with someone that does not like it, just happens to come up.. then people get lectured about dropping specifics and such and threads can get locked here. Especially if subject matter (non reefing in this case) is not approved of by nit pickers.

So, I tend to try for low profile on the specifics of things. That's all.
It's silly, when often this site is just for fun and sometimes "help" for some people. That negative spin offs can happen. NOT in this case of course.
But why I'm careful about talking about certain things with specific "names".

I'm sure if anyone knows them or someone is on here, they will appreciate the "plug" though.. LOL :spin1:

As far as prices rising, they are on everything.
Someone starts it at the beginning of something and trickle on down...
Through everything. Sometimes justified and sometimes not.
But there is always an excuse why, it's gone up.
It's about $$ in pockets.
If you knew what things truly cost, it would make you sick.

well we're getting the "top of the line" kenmore unit with self diagnostics and its suppose to be the most energy efficient unit for the size of our home with full warranty and installation for around 3k. We havent signed anything yet since we have to update the breaker box first but how is this price?? its cheaper than the other 2 weve gotten.

Sounds like an average to me...
For a regular job, done the straight way with no real insider discounts. This is what most people have to get. It's just the way it works. You pay what the industry charges on average.

With the warranty, you can't go wrong. Just make sure your install guys do a good job of cleaning up too. Sears often uses secondary HVAC installers(not sears employees) to do these jobs. Some GOOD companies, some maybe not.. If it's cheaper than your other 2 qoutes, you may want to go with it. But it won't kill you to check 2-3 other outfits either..

Anyone else?

We ended up going with a more established, more expensive company. Originally gonna go with the cheaper independent guy but his phone service got cut and I couldnt get ahold of him for a week... didnt really consider him after that :)
