OT: Ice Cubes

Why do my ice cubes sometimes crumble and sometimes they come out nice and in 1 piece? Does it possibly have something to do with the temp of the water I use when I fill the tray? No I don't have an auto ice maker. :(

and I hijacked it. :)

Seriously though... What's the deal with this? It happens to me too and I don't like it one bit....

i think it may be something to do with water impurites and the way the ice crystal forms where there will be weak spots in the cube. i think thats also how the ice cube cracks when it melts. im no scientist though,

But, I use the same water from my sink every time I make ice. Sometimes they are good, sometimes they aren't.

I have tried using RO, but in reality, I am just far too lazy and getting the water from the tap is just easier. I might try the boiling thing once though, but that is even more work. I don't too much care about the clarity, but more about the breaking apart in the tray.

Use colder water. The surface of hotter water will freeze faster than the lower part of the cube. this causes nonuniform ice grains, which break apart in the tray.

It is cooling from its 2nd boil right now. I will fill the tray before I go to bed. I will give my report tomorrow.

i used to rinse the bottom of the tray with warm water. and they would slip out. but that was like 10 years ago, i got a ice maker now.

WOW you guys actually sit around and wait for water to freeze? kind like watching grass grow or paint drying right? :)
