OT: In the market for a new laptop

Mark,

I PM'ed you some info. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. I usually can find good deals on computers. If you are going with a Mac, I would take Edwin on his offer.

I actually make my living as a Solaris expert. Mac OS is not Solaris. ;)

OS X runs the Mach kernel and uses a variant of BSD unix as its sub-system. Solaris runs it's own kernel and is a SystemV Unix variant. Linux is Linux; it's not Unix. Linux is technically just a kernel; developed by Linus Torvalds. The rest of the system is based on open source tools from the GNU project. GNU stands for "GNU's Not Unix."

The next version of OS X will contain some code taking from the OpenSolaris project; namely DTrace and ZFS. Neither were developed as open source software. They were created as part of Solaris 10 and then shared with the open source community under the name OpenSolaris.

You all do realize that the new Mac OS is just a pretty version of Sun Solaris 10. Which is just a nice flavor of Open Source software. Just like Linux (any version since mandrake 10), but with a different name tag placed onto it.

I went through the orientation training for the Apple facility in Elk Grove.

Their website that I acessed while I was there boasted that their software was 'very closely related' to Solaris 10.

I am sure their are distinct differences from one to the next, (and I only sparingly use either, so I am not familiar with the newest changes for either.)

Not trying to argue semantics with anyone, and you probably know more detailed info than I do there anyways. But the end result is still the same. Most all of the new generation of OS's are becoming more and more similar.

And my point there was to emphasise how pointless worrying over which OS to select really is.
Viruses can impact everyone.
Go with the real deal breaker.
