OT is TP a real QB?

I am not calling the guy out, just wondering aloud if Pryer is really a QB or just a really good athlete lined up as QB.

TP is a beast to defend as a run threat no doubt about it. But in the two minuet drill, or late in a game. its 3rd and forever can he make it happen with his arm.

I had to listen to most of the game on the radio but I got the impression that he was never very comfortable looking when he had to make "that pass"

In some ways this sort of reminds me of having Berry Sanders. He was a defender's worst nightmare. He juked one time so hard it really did break Ron Woodson's ankle.
But when it was 4th and a long one; A first down runs the clock out or keeps a fadding hope alive for one more set of downs. How sure was he to get that tough yard.

As a lions fan I can tell you he missed as many or more than he ever got.

TP is sort of the same way. He can dazle you but he has not shown me that he can lead a team when it needs a passer
I am not trying to sound like a jerk just saying what I think more than a few are at least wondering

TP is indeed the real deal!
And to answer your question he's both a Great Athelete and a (potentially) Great QB.
Yeah he blew a few passes but that could just as easily be placed on the O-line which didn't really allow him time to throw.
And more determintal than that Dave was the offensive play calling. How many times did we try running Boom up the middle and he broke what, maybe one? And nothing against Boom he'd be a helluva scat back if they used him like that but they don't.
Why is it that the USC quarterback could get 2 yards everytime on quarterback sneaks? Yet, when the Bucks had the ball down near the goal line Tress called hand-offs to a 190 lb. running back who got stuffed? Again, Boom is a good running back but Pryor is big and strong and hand-offs take time.Pryor would have been able to get 2 yards on a couple of quarterback sneaks and the score should have been 17-7 @ half-time.
It's really ashame too because the defense done their job. If I'd told you before the game that O-State would hold USC to 10 points with just a couple of minutes left you'd have said OSU would win this game "walking away" right?

Porky, You are very right about the play selection. I don't pretend to know what goes on during the prep week to know if I am missing something on game day, but the play calls do seem to be mechanical, predictable, or just not right for the guy. keeping our QB on the move is going to break down coverage, open running lanes and allow an o-line to be athletes too.

nothing wrong with TP being able to make a coverage adjustment either. IE a 5 or 7 step drop can be optioned into a drop and roll out away from or toward a "read" blitz.

I agree that I totally would have taken a ten point hold bet.
The defense did their part and more.

I would have spread the field on those short line plays
Trips left- tight right and a naked boot leg right . The tight end and TP will both have one on one match ups
I like TP in the open field against an end and corner or outside LB.
I just can not see going time after time between the tackles with a guy that can make people miss in the open field. Designed cut backs are ok for a guy like that but won't work if the lead play has not worked to a point where more guys are reading it and taking themselves out of postion to defened that lead play.

but it comes back to this for me: a long field, and you need a couple 20-30 yard pass plays to get you in range to kick a field goal or to drive down the field in a hurry. can he be trusted to get that done???

The short of it is that the bucks could have done a little better on plays called for who is on the field, TP needs to show more that he is a QB. Doesn't have to be a pocket passer but needs to be able to see the field and get the ball down field on the move.

I did get the feeling that TP was off his game a little, even compared to last week when his passes looked a lot sharper given it was a lesser opponent but he was not at the top of his game. That said, he played good enough for them to win.
I guess I'm mostly upset because OSU snatched defeat from of the jaws of victory!
And I place that blame squarely at the feet of the coaching staff. Who only has 1 job, to put the right players in a position to win and he didn't do it.
The decision making and play calling, especially on offense, were total blunders. giving them 3 pts at the end of the first, not scoring on the 2 yard line, uh QB sneak, not getting field goals on multiple occasions, the list goes on....
I really want Tress to hire an offensive coordinator and hand over the reins to someone else, anyone else, you doing anything Saturday Dave?

Dear goodness, what and have a bunch of arm chair jokers ripping me without knowing the whole story LOL

There is just too much going on for most head coaches to be able to be pounding the defensive tendency charts, their own habbit charts and realize who is having a good game and who might need help with particular plays to get them going. all done in 25 seconds.

Head coachs still add their two cents and that is fine but you are so right about getting the O coach to call the plays

Porky I think you nailed it on everything.... except Pryor. Tress really needs to hire an OC, the days of smash mouth up the middle woody hayes football are over, athletes are just to strong and fast for that anymore. When coaches like Pete Carol go up against Tress they know exactly how he is going to run his offense because it's the same old boring vanilla flavor he always brings. I really think Pryor needs a lot of work on his pocket passing ability. He is an amazing athlete there is no way you can deny that, but his delivery, descison making , and ability to read defenses all need major improvements.
But if you remember Troy Smith was much the same way his first couple of years but by his junior year he just became a wonderful pocket QB. Pryor just needs another year of development before he will be the dual threat he is hyped to be. He is capable of it but just isn't there yet.

that pretty much sums it up, other than I am not so sure that TP is willing to put the work into learning that part of being a quarterback. Vic is sort of that same way just a bit better at it LOL

Ummm.... I am a huge Buckeye fan so don't think I am hating on them, just tough love. Porky I think you are wrong about one thing, and that it the defense doing there job. They did there job for 3.5 quarters but the last drive they were terrible. We had them backed up deep on our side of the field and even had them held to a few 2nd and very long and third and long plays, and what happened.... our defense failed to shut it down. Yes we owned them for 3/4 the game on both sides of the ball and I def. agree about the play calling and it should have not even mattered if they scored that last drive, but thats not how it played out and the D got soft after looking great all game.

P.S. TP still has a LONG ways to go, but he will be ok he's young, and still coming into his own. Although the intentional grounding and the loss of down hurt alot the last drive!

So holding USC to 10 points with just a couple of minutes left is not doing their job? I think the Defense played stellar! And to "reward" them @ the end of the game by putting them back on the field was not a good coaching move to me. They had to be wore out by that point...
Tressel's play calling at the end of the 1st half for both the Navy game and the USC game was horrendous. It almost cost us the Navy game and outright cost us the USC game.
We need to stop recruiting dinosaurs for our offensive line! That's the only big change I see that is immediately needed. The second half play calling wasn't great, and Pryor's play wasn't great, but I would have liked to see more pressure on their young QB.
Long story short, I'm now in 'hold Tressel accountable' mode, which I've never been in but that loss is inexcusable.

Jason, I am with you on the coaching and defense points. USC has a darn good offense with a lot of things to worry about at the same time. To hold them as they did was a feat and my hat is off to them.

I think the writing is on the wall that its time to plug a play calling OC into the Bucks system. This guy should be less conservative then Tressel and able to stand his ground in a pinch to balance each other out a bit

ok...lol You are taking my words and twisting them a bit... I said the deffense played great for 3.5 quarters of football. You can not sit there and tell me on the last drive when it counted they played good. The D had them held to more than one long yardage plays and failed to stop them. That to me says he deffense was to blame. And you say the Defense was tired? Our Offense was on the field all night up untill that last drive, that is why they are at the Ohio State University for is to play defense... If they want to get tired maybe they should have signed on to a MAC school or any of the other small confrences. I do agree though it should have never came down to that last drive. There were MANY coaching errors and that is inexcusable, but don't let the deffense off that easy. They gave up an 80 some odd yard drive with the game on the line after shutting them down all night not to mention letting them convert on a 2nd and 18 and a 3rd and 8.

regardless, its pretty hard to swallow. I am a patient sort of person but not seen that next level step that the bucks seemed ready to make a couple years or so ago.

There is a need for some changes in the program. I just hope we don't have to wait all season for that to happen

I know that loss was probablly the worst one yet in my opinion. To control the game like we did just to loss it at the end is ruff. I don't really understand Tress and agree with the fact he has no business calling the offensive plays. He is an odds man and plays conservative yet he throws the ball instead of running out the clock and taking a 3 point lead into half? And don't even get me started about the play at the 1 yard line :mad2:

Let's see. Navy gave them all the heck they could handle and for the comparative recruiting base that's saying something.

And then the Trojan Man comes to town and leaves with a victory.

It's not looking good and I've felt it hasn't ever since the SEC got it's teeth into them a couple years ago.

But they offer some decent recruits to the NFL and there's butts in the seats so maybe that's all the atheletic department and the school cares about at the end of the day.

I know I know. It's Michigan's fault since they are no longer pushing the buckeye's to perform.

Some wins against these top teams would be great. And I'm certainly not a fan of Tressel's play-calling. But 7-1 against Michigan is the most important stat of all for me, right with national championships won: certainly more important than national championship games played in, BCS bowls played in or won, Big Ten championships won, record against top-5 teams, etc.

That's it!!!! It is Michigan's fault; there now I feel much much better. All is right in the universe

As I knew you would, ;) .

Pryor will never be a pro QB. He is a great athlete but he is far from a great QB. Unfortunatly for us, we will have 2 more years of watching him "learning" to throw the ball on saturdays... Because he wants to be a pro system QB but wont have what it takes to GO pro after 3 years!

I am ALL on that band wagon for letting someone else call the plays but we actually do have an OC, Jim Bollman. How much influence he has on the play calls exactly? Who knows. We all know there needs to be some changes made... If you look back to every loss prior to the 2005 Texas loss in the shoe, except for maybe the 07 Illinois loss, there is one common factor. Lack of points from terrible play calling.

Boom up the gut on that USC line? Are you kidding me?? Not even just once, we watched that failure multiple times! Come on, a screen play or a run option maybe. Gut, not a chance.

Tressel ball failed us again and damn its getting old. :(

TP is a great athlete and could be a great QB, but we might never know. i think the mistake was letting him play last yr. he will most likely leave next yr to go to the league, when i think he needed a yr to learn the system and watch. its a big leap from high school and a bigger leap to the league. he is an incredible athlete but could use some fine tuning as a QB......but so could i!! :D

not to mention i dont think we really have a "big 10" running back this yr. not that its a bad thing but typically its 3yds and a cloud of dust.......
corey
