OT kinda-pumps and hydro power

Moved On Up
this is about pumps but not for my reef, someone was telling me about Hydro powered pumps for when the power goes out, What happens is a solenoid vavle opens and water from your house begins to flow and this in turn powers the sump which removes water before your basement floods. this is obviously a great idea and got me interested. I figuered someone here could help me out cuz i know there are a lot of knowledgeable people on this site within many different fields. i would love any info you have on these preferably a link, i could not find anything on them as i am searching with the wrong keyword i guess.

my other issue with it was ths guy said they pump 6 gallons for every one gallon. If this is right, how could it be, then why can't we use water returning from the display to power the pump on a closed loop. anyways i know this has to be false cuz if it wasn't we'd all have free energy.
TIA
also is anyone harnessing the power from all the water we move, or does it just not produce enough energy to make it worthwhile?

Have you ever seen the documentary "Who Killed The Electric Car?" http://www.sonyclassics.com/whokilledtheelectriccar/ Many things are possible. We are only limited by our intellectual capacity and greed. Stepping down from my soapbox.

okay so confirm these 6 to one pumps exists, i'll use one the run the pump and the other five "power units" to charge batteries. that would be nice. pump water up, water falls and lifts itself back up mysteriously leaving 5 times more power. haha.

No but you could lessen the power used, by using an alternator from a car and directing flow of raw water...that would be a facility though, like on the Gulf..etc. anyway just rambling

I don't know about the 6:1 ratio but your house water is under pressure usually around 30-50 psi. Whereas water falling from the display is under very little pressure. The potential energy in the pressurized water is much greater. Though using your house water system will still cost you money(water bill or electricity from running well pump) its not free.

lecher you are absolutely right, the guy who brought these pumps to my attention brought in his spec sheet on them yesterday and low and behold, obviously, they generate all their power from the pressuse, intersestingly though they can pump to nearly 16.4 feet with 40 psi. this is prolly a theoretical number that doesn't factor in all the unknowns, fittings, water clarity/content, temp...still a cool way to stop your basement from flooding during a power outage...
