OT: Kobe wants out!

Unarce

Unshackled
the **** has hit the fan

The story lines that have engulfed the Los Angeles Lakers in the last week hit a crescendo Wednesday when Kobe Bryant said he would welcome a trade.

"I would like to be traded, yeah," Bryant said on 1050 ESPN Radio in New York. "Tough as it is to come to that conclusion there's no other alternative, you know?"

Bryant, interviewed by Stephen A. Smith, was asked if there was anything the Lakers could do to change his mind.

"No," Bryant said. "I just want them to do the right thing."

Earlier in the day, Bryant said team owner Jerry Buss masterminded the trade of Shaquille O'Neal -- and Shaq later confirmed Kobe's account.

The issues between Bryant and the Lakers have reached a boil, beginning with Bryant voicing his displeasure with the club's direction, his suggestion that Jerry West should return to fix things, West's statement that he has no intention of undermining GM/good friend Mitch Kupchak, and, unrelated but bizarre in its timing, Buss' arrest early Tuesday for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Bryant was left "beyond furious" by a report in Tuesday's Los Angeles Times that read, "as a Lakers insider notes, it was Bryant's insistence on getting away from Shaquille O'Neal that got them in this mess."

O'Neal was traded to the Miami Heat after the 2003-04 season, and the long-held belief has been that the deteriorating relationship between O'Neal and Bryant was a factor in O'Neal's departure.

In response to the Times' story, Bryant, interviewed by Smith for a Philadelphia Inquirer column, said Buss "called a meeting with me after he spoke with Jim Gray [of ESPN] to talk with him about Shaq's future in the middle of the 2004 season.

"He met with me at the Four Seasons Hotel here [in Newport Beach, Calif.] across from Fashion Island, which is now the Island Hotel," Bryant told Smith. "I went up to his penthouse suite. [Buss] looks me dead in the face and says: 'Kobe, I am not going to re-sign Shaq. I am not about to pay him $30 million a year or $80 million over three years. No way in hell. I feel like he's getting older. His body is breaking down, and I don't want to pay that money to him when I can get value for him right now rather than wait.

"This is my decision. It's independent of you. My mind is made up. It doesn't matter to me what you do in free agency because I do not want to pay [Shaq], period.'"

"Dr. Buss said that," Bryant told Smith. "And I haven't said anything for years because I've always felt like folks were just looking to create controversy. Now I know. I realize what extent [the Lakers] will go to, to cover themselves."

Reached afterward, O'Neal told Smith that he believed his former teammate to be beyond reproach.

"I believe Kobe 100 percent," O'Neal said when reached in Los Angeles. "Absolutely. There's no doubt in my mind Kobe is telling the truth. I believe him a thousand percent.

"I would have respected Dr. Buss more as a man if he would have told me that himself, because I know he said it. But he didn't [tell me]. He never said a damn word to me."

Buss was unavailable for comment Tuesday, as was Kupchak. Buss, 74, was booked early Tuesday for investigation of drunken driving and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or above.

The Lakers missed the playoffs in the first season after O'Neal was dealt for Lamar Odom, Caron Butler, Brian Grant and a first-round pick, and have been eliminated in the first round the last two seasons. O'Neal and the Heat won the NBA championship last season.

"Sure, Shaq and I had our issues," Bryant told Smith. "So what! We always did and we won three titles. That doesn't change what was told to me. It doesn't change the fact I never, ever, said to get rid of him."

While Bryant re-signed for $136 million for seven years the day after O'Neal was traded, he has pushed for trades -- he wanted Carlos Boozer, then Jason Kidd, then Ron Artest -- that the Lakers were unable to pull off. Meanwhile, Odom has undergone shoulder surgery but is expected to be ready for training camp in October; Kwame Brown has undergone reconstructive surgery on his left ankle and might not be ready for the start of camp.

And now Bryant, who reportedly has made it clear to the Lakers that he may see fit to terminate his contract in two years, has told Smith he won't continue to wait for Buss to build the roster around him.

"Promises made to make this team better have not been kept," Bryant told Smith. "So where does that leave me?"

Wouldn't it be nice if Petrie was already turning his wheels on a Artest/Miller/Rahim for Kobe/Brown trade ;)

You would need more than that to get KOBE. C'mon look at his contract. You have to match the contract. Plus the Lakers are not dumb in bringing those guys in. They will trade the contract and youth. If Kobe is going to be traded, he will have to re-do his contact, because he has a "no trade clause".
Then the Lakers will want youth for Kobe. Though Kobe has 10yrs experience he is only 27! That is still young. You are looking at either the Bulls, or the Warriors as great candidates for the trade because of their depth, youth, and contracts. Look for Kobe (if he is even going to be traded) or K.G. to go to either one of those two teams this offseason.
Get off the wagon, because the Kings will be set back for a good 5 years for rebuilding. Then you have to think of the other moves they make throughout to get back to championship contention.

Get off the wagon

Easy there! No one would ever confuse me for a Kings fan. Plus, get your facts straight. Kobe will be a very worn out 29 come August, as he has logged 12.5 years of minutes (including playoffs) since he's entered the league. He's no spring chicken.

The salaries would match enough for a trade in the above scenario, but I was just throwing it up there to relate to the locals. Kobe can also waive the trade clause in his contract.

WE DONT WANT HIM!!!!! The only thing that keeps the Lakers from being great is that Kobe is such a jerk no other free agents want to play with him. NOT EVEN IF IT MEANS LIVING IN L.A.!!!! The Clippers are a more desirable team these days for free agents than the lakers. But I will gladly ship them Miller and Kenny Thomas, Free of charge....we will say a 3rd round pick as fair trade :D Kobe is bad news. The titles are Shaq's titles and Kobe will never win another one as a Laker. As bad as the kings are, my only pleasure is knowing the Lakers aren't winning any championships. Kobe was the poster boy for the league a few years back, he is Never on commercials anymore.. We just need to send Artest and Bibby somewhere for young players to build around and be ready for another good draft pick next year!! Since Portaland and Seattle are both getting monsterous genetic freaks out of the draft this year, we should be picking early in the draft for years to come!!!! VIVA LAS VEGAS

Even at 29. C'mon he can ball like the newbies coming into the league. Dropping 80 on a team, and consecutive 40+ pts per game. I just realized your avatar there, so my apologies.
But if the Lakers were to trade Kobe, it would be for potential and their ability to rebuild. Getting the aformentioned players would do the Lakers no good.
He may not be a spring chicken, but he is not a washed up monkey either.

Guys:

It would take AT THE MINIMUM Artest/Bibby/Martin and the #1 for Kobe. And the Lakes still might not take that. If I were the Lakers, I'd be pushing for a trade w/ Seattle for R. Allen/L. Riddenour/#1 pick.

Kobe's got their hands tied, though. An organization basically has very little bargaining power when a player demands a trade. Who would have ever thought that Iverson would be traded for Andre Miller and Joe Smith?

That would be something, but I don't think the Sonics would do it. Also, I can't see Kobe wanting to move to Oklahoma.

I would send the Laker's Mussleman, Hurley, and Chilcut. Not a penny more. I hope that the Curse of the Diesel plagues the Lakers for the next 87 years.

As far as getting off the wagon, The Kings wont be a contender for a title for AT LEAST 3-5 years, but neither will the Lakers. If you think the Lakers are close, probably time you get to a meeting :) The problem with being one of the last teams to make the playoffs is you never get the type of player in the draft to get back to the top. Look out for Portland, rumor has it they are shopping Randolph to get a pick to take Oden's teamate Connely Jr. Add Roy to that mix and they are gonna be a power in Oden's second year. Good news is they will bump the lakers out of the playoffs and then they can improve through the draft.

That would be a brilliant move if they pull that off. I wouldn't want Randolph influencing Oden for a second.

If Seattle made that move there front office should be shot on sight!!!! Durant is worth more than Kobe straight up. Just remeber he is paid very little for his first few years. Nobody wants to play with Kobe, he is a cancer. Cancer's dont win championships. Just ask Ron Artest,

Farmar/Odom/Bynum is a good starting point. If we can get 3 starters for Kobe, I don't think we'd be that far off. The NBA won't let the Lakers turn into the Celtics/Sixers/Queens.

Karl-there had to be a couple of good draft picks in the AI trade.

I do not think the Sonics will be giving those guys up anyway. Ray Allen is basically their franchise, and building around him for "now" ever since they acquired him. It will be interesting to see where he is going to go. They really are in a bind, and it's basically up to Kobe as to where he wants to go. It will be fun to see where he goes.

John...YOU ARE SO OBVIOUSLY A LAKER FAN!!! :P
They are the team that traded the championship to the Heat. Jackson is leaving after he collects his last 10 million dollars as he realizes he blew it. He knew Shaq was the franchise and thought Kobe might have a change in attitude. You cant get a glue horse to win the Kentucky derby and Kobe is too selfish to be the man. He was ok as the second fiddle to Shaq. I hope he retires as a Laker and gets you all as many 7th and 8th seeds as possible. I like to refer to him as Kobe Bonds.

BTW Karl.... You are the thread starting master!!!!

Paulie-So I gravitate to championship teams!!

Put Kobe,KG and Artest along w/ Farmar and Brown, and we will have the championships back in LALA Land!!!!!!!!!!

There was one other player thrown in with AI, and Denver got one 1st rounder.

I am a Kings fan and will always be a Kings fan. For those people out there who do not want Kobe, you are crazy. It is like collecting LE corals or brownouts. The kings have a lot of brown outs with no polyp extensions, while Kobe is one of a kind. This is so hard for me to say, but he is hands down the best, the second best, and the third best player in the league.

My $.02
