OT: Load balanced servers

In light of the repeated server issues with RC...

Has RC considered load balanced servers?

Any thought to moving URS off RC?

I find I spend MUCH less time on RC because of the "wicked busy" issues. The sponsors / advertisers will be the ones that will force improvements though. Perhaps some notes to them suggesting you tried to access them through RC (unsuccessfully) will motivate them to pressure RC to do what they need to do.

Yeah, I gave up trying to read any forum topics last night. It's been more than a decade since I suffered through surfing via a modem, but RC's servers take me right back to that...

I would think (hope) there is some sort of network load balancing cluster setup, just not enough servers to handel the high traffic here (not that we could tell from our end). I would think RC is much too big (and has been) to be run off of a single server.

Someone tried it a year or two ago. To many stubborn old schoolers would rather deal with the issues than switch.
wait a minute..... how many stubborn old schoolers are still around here?

Being faithful used to be a virtue.

Everyone is free to come and go as they please... we have no rules or dues here :fun2:

As opposed to the master/slave database server and hardware load balanced web farm we're using now?

Have you considered co-location? From a user perspective it's pretty slow and has been getting worse lately. Seems to be the worst when we get the east and west coasts on at the same time. I know this is (for the most part) a free community and you probably have limited resources. Just trying to help out in any way I can.

I deal with a lot of overseas traffic and spikes at different times during the day. We've co-located farms in certain geographic areas to alleviate the bottlenecks.

Normally, bandwidth isn't an issue as we have a dedicate 10mb link directly to the backbone. Any slowness yesterday, however, as mentioned on our Facebook page our host had a major router failure.

Most of our standard slowness issues have more to do with limitations in vbulletin than where we host our servers. Frankly it'd be hard to beat the hosting situation we have now. We own all of our own hardware. They just provide IP, HVAC and power. They don't even have logins to our gear.

Cheers

One old school stubborn coot here for sure.
Faithful went out of vogue when people started buying Japanese cars in the 1970s
I had a boss that used to tell his people "if you don't like it here, leave". They did.
He went outta business.
Just sayin...

I've noticed a cycle within RC and within this forum: people leave. They come back- or want to come back!

I don't think RC is in danger of going out of business.

And hey... I had a 280Z back in the '70's!

I'm sure you right about people cycling in and out. I'm simply suggesting that what may be interpreted as complaining by one person, may be viewed as constructive criticism by another.

I don't think RC is in danger of going out of business either.

Sooo, let me make sure I understand....you're saying YOU lost your "virtue" in the '70's?:lolspin::beer:

btw, it took over 10 minutes to compose and post this.... smileys took forever to process.

ps. I was driving a goat.
