OT-Looking for a dog

My wife has decided we need a house dog. We are not sure what kind we want yet. We prefer a smaller one that will get along with our cat. We are not crazy about all the hybrid one although we like the puggle. Were can we go in St Louis this Saturday to look at puppies? Are there any stores that have a good selection of them or breeders that we could go? We are just starting looking and wont be getting one for a few weeks or longer. Any ideas would be great.

Thanks

are you interested in adoption at all?

if so, HSMO.org has some locations

when I was looking for a dog I noticed that the shelters closer to the city were about 75% pit bulls and pit bull mixes, so there wasn't really anything there I was interested

I adopted from open door animal sanctuary www.odas.org they're down in house spring, so they have more lab mix type dogs like that, probably not so much for smaller house dogs

Well if you don't mind it not being a full breed I would say it's definitely better to adopt and out here in fenton arnold area every petco and petsmart has young puppies for adoption every sat or sun.

If your specifically wanting a full breed I would go with a well known private breeder they typically are better dogs and easier to train. I would also as a type of dog Highly recommend a Caviler King Charles spaniel , I love mine he is the friendliest dog and is so smart and very beautiful. Though a bit of a lap dog. i happen to like that though

i adopted all my animals since they come already fixed with shots and chip. I went to petfinder.com.

Alright, I read the article and think I qualify. I have looked at petfinder and I dont think it will work for me. I think I want a pure breed. Most on petfinder are mixed breed. Also with the adoption fees of 150-250 I can get a pure breed puppy for around that or a little more. If anyone has any ideas of were to look at pure breed puppies let me know.

Thanks

I just put the article up to show the undying loyalty we owe to our pets...we see all too often people being "suddenly" unable to take care of a pet that they made a lifelong committment to:(

That said, I think you are going to have to pick a breed that both you and your wife think fits with your current/future family situation, living arrangements, etc, etc. Once you pick a breed, then find several reputable breeders to interview and don't skimp on that phase of the deal (trust me).

I don't know of any reputable breeders that just happen to breed several different pedigree's. Usually, a breeder is dedicated to being knowledgable and breeding one particular type of dog and they know everything about it and can best help determine if it fits your needs.

purebreed puppies dont come with alterations (if that matters)

not trying to push you either way, Ive only adopted 1 of my 3 dogs and one is a pure maltese that I bought, so I dont have preference, just trying to help you decide

If you seriously want a purebred, please consider looking at specific breed rescues. Many breed rescues have websites and you can often find young dogs and puppies. The added benefit is that many of these dogs will have been housed in a foster situation- so they will know a lot more about the dog if it has specific problems- e.g. if it's good with kids, with cats, has storm phobia, etc. I have a rescued purebred collie- he has his papers and anything, but his owner died and there were no family members that could take him so he got put in a rescue.

If you get a puppy from a breeder they're not going to know that information. Not to mention that purebred dogs tend to have way more health problems than mixed breeds, and often you can find a mixed breed that essentially looks purebred.

I'm a vet student, so I'm way biased against pure bred dogs- there are thousands of great dogs (and puppies!) being euthanized every day. In 10 years of experience of working at vet clinics, I can honestly say that often the purebred puppies that people paid bukoo bucks for end up with lots of health problems as puppies due to being crowded, not given individual attention, vaccinated by people who don't know what they're doing, etc.

And as for your comment about adoption fees costing $250 and that being what you can get a purebred puppy for- the ones you adopt will already be dewormed, have their first set of shots, be spayed or neutered and be microchipped. It's a really really good deal and a purebred puppy won't come with any of that.

Just some thoughts from someone in the profession. Best of luck finding your new companion!

fkdenton,

I do know a friend that breeds a couple of different small breed dogs. It would help us to help you if we knew what breed you were looking for.

Bad part is I'm 90 minutes from St. Louis down interstate 44.

If you have a breed in mind I could find out if he has or is expecting any puppies.

Another web site to look at different puppies and some basic info on them is puppyfind.com

And before Nook starts jumping up and down about an icepick sighting.......I was just lurking.

my wife and i resurched what kind if dog we wanted for a while before we picked our dog i think you need to read about the diffrent breeds and see what suits you. we narowed our choices down to a pug and a jack russell. they are two very diffrent dogs. we ended up getting the jack and we love her but she is very and i mean very active. you have been to my house fk i know you know how hyper maddie is. unlike a pug that does not need as much exsercise every dog has its isues and strenths you are not just buying a pet you are buying a member of the family. our dog is our first baby.

i never worried about adopting fees cause it does cover spaying or neutering and shots, micro chips. But like someone else said there are specific breed rescue groups like i work with someone who runs a golden retriever rescue. As far as small dogs my brother in law got a toy foxface terrier which was a very cute and smart dog, so i went out and got a toy rat terrier which looks like a foxface terrier, very playful, awesome little dog, follows me everywhere.

Yeah that dog didnt like me to much:D

We have been researching quite a bit and are starting to think that Puggles might be for us. Anyone with any experiance with them?

my buddy has a puggle...I personally dont like beagles or pugs, but that doesnt mean the breed is no good

make sure they dont come with the health related issues that pure pugs come with (breathing) and you should be good to go

from everything I have read they dont have any of the breathing issues pugs have because there faces are not flat like a pugs. They worst I have heard is they sometimes get ear infections.

every dog is going to be prone to having trouble with something. that does not mean every dog will have problems

Get a list of breeders in our area for the breeds of dogs you would consider.

Then contact them. If you are willing to take a young adult, many breeders have dogs that are actually show champions which they will sell quite cheaply compared to a puppy.

And in the event of a young adult, you know about any major health issues of immediate concern.

Just my two cents...
