OT - Lumber in the Blo

I was just thinking to myself, "I wonder if there's some group of people I know that have a lot of experience building things locally..." Should have thought about you guys first :). Long story short, I'm re-doing my back porches this summer, completely. They're about 10x8 footprint, 2 stories, and covered on top with a roof (typical north buffalo double small back porch setup). The reason I'm replacing them is well cause they're about to fall over cause they were last replaced with 1x6's for headers and posts that are secured to nothing and are just floating  :hmm2: :headwallblue:. In order to do this properly though I need some probably special lumber that I doubt I can just walk into HD and buy. What I need for SURE is an 18' long pressure treated 4x4 minimum (could be 4x6 or 6x6 too if I want overkill). 18' is the trick, that's pretty damned long. I could futz around with steel at the 2nd floor deck join, but I'd really rather a single piece of lumber (even if it costs more). Any idea if that can even be ordered by HD/Lowes, or am I going to have to drag myself out to the suburbs to a lumber mill to find out? If you have any experience ordering ludicrously long pressure-treated lumber and can save me some hassle, I'm all ears :)

I think most lumber yards can get 20' stuff like that for you. I'm not familiar with Buffalo stores though...

any chance of making you own beam out of 2-12' and 2-8' 2x6's? Then you can get them from lowes (I am finishing up a deck i built-12x13.4")
over lap the two 12' by 4' on each other then fill the rest in with the two 8'.
Just a thought, this weather is inspiring to get out and get things done outside!! Best of luck with your project!

RJ, this is for posts, not beams and I'm really worried about the shear points of all the screws if I tried ganging 2x lumber together.

Erock, I haven't tried lenco yet, how I forgot about them I don't know :)

Lol, with what would I get them home? My wife's 2001 Ford Focus, or my 2011 Hyundai Sonata? :). No, I'll be paying the $39 for delivery. Let someone else do the work for that price
