OT: Peacock bassin

8 lb. mono.... more or less a 30 minute fight with the 12 pounder, mainly cuz it kept diving into a weed bed, which made it more difficult to control... it had my reel drag working overtime.

the 10 pounder was caught on 10 lb. mono, in open water, so it wasn't as tough a fight... still took my line out for a long ride!!

I'm pretty sure the record for 8# class is only 8lb 8oz, because I've been looking real hard at braking it =)

the 12# class is 19lb 12oz, and the 20# class is 12lb 12oz which is also the all class record.

This was also a few yrs ago, but if i remember correctly the tensile strength of the line went a little over 8lbs when they tested it, so there was an issue with placement... either the 8lb category or the 12lb category... I don't believe they have a 10lb slot for peacock bass in IGFA.

whats your guys secrets! i get aggravated whenever i go fishing cuz i cant catch shi*@. I only seem to do ok during when the season picks up early spring.

whats your guys bait of choice with peacocks?

yeah I made an error, the 12# is 12.9 not 19.12

either way, nice fish, my best was a 23" that went just over 8lbs

Bawla, no secret. If they are bedding just trow whatever you have in their face, they will eat it. If they are swiming around, a rapala husky jerk in black/gold or chartruse is hard to beat.

The world record has to be more than that... in the Amazon they routinely get to 25-30 lbs... seen many fishing shows about that.

Chris, there are many types of peacock bass, the butterfly does not get that big. I was lucky enough to go peacock bass fishing in Panama in 1998. I didn't catch any monsters like on tv, but it was a blast.

Thanks Sonic....!! The way those peacocks eat, I wouldn't be surprised if that record is shattered sooner than later...

Chris is correct. What Ludwigia probably saw was the speckled Peacock bass, which can reach over 40 lbs in South America. Both butterflies and speckled were introduced into South Florida canals as a control for invasive exotic species, but the Speckled peacock could not tolerate the cold winter snaps as well as the butterfly, so it has pretty much died out in South Florida. When I lived in Peru i've fished for speckled peacocks, dorados and Payara, which is an incredible fish to hook.

Correct, the Speckled Peacock is the one that gets big, record is 27lbs and its thought to be the hardest fighting freshwater fish.

good lures for peacocks

I've found that the rapala shad (the shallow runner with the bent lip) is perfect to avoid tangles in the weedbeds, but runs close enough to entice an ambush hit. Found these pics... taken from the lake on my backyard.. most fell for the ol' rap shad!!

Yes, they are very prolific... never tried eating one, though... :D

There's this other pic I haven't been able to find, of this giant Oscar I caught in my lake.... that thing was dinner plate sized and there's tons of them around too.

I'm always down for a fishing trip, and canal fishing is so easy to do too!!

Nice pics!

I would be down for a fmas fishing trip, we could do a canal lake trip or we could do some saltwater on my boat, I can fit like 6 confortably.
