Look at Tiger Direct. They have a facility in the chicago area so shipping is quick. They have probably the best prices around as well. ALso look at overstock.com.

If you are gaming, you will need to push refresh and response rate as high as possible. A great deal of LCD technology is still behind CRT on these issues and it can make a world of difference. You might find the following article interesting:

That said I have a 42" Panasonic plasma that I picked up two years ago with the excuse of "The only way we are going to be able to fit the furniture into the Living room is if we put the TV on the wall." I love the picture and its only a EDTV rather than HDTV set. (I don't do blueray) We have no burn in and the picture is still visible in bright daylight from the windows opposite the set. Take this into consideration too as if your LCD is in a bright room it may wash out.

I am going to also vote for talking with the guys at ABT and let them know exactly what you want to do with the set.

I personally think that the Plasma is still way more vivid than LCD but it is not considered appropriate for gaming. Good luck and enjoy your purchase.

Dont forget if you buy a plasma then you can never move to Colorado....

Like I said earlier Kimoy, youre more than welcome to check out my little tv, or I could throw it out on the sony 50" LCD projection and you could see it out there....

The projection sets are VERY cheap now if you have the room, if youre needing it to go onto a wall though you cant really go wrong with either the thin LCD or Plasma, but I would personally go with LCD if youre going to be gaming....

I have both... downside of a plasma is it WILL degrade over time/use. This will happen very gradually and evenly over a period of several years. Unless of course you watch QVC 24/7... you will get a "burn in" of the graphics which will be visible on other channels. LCD will live many more hours than a plasma. LCDs, depending on the processor do not do as well with fast moving cameras, such as a camera panning across the field on a kick. you may see what looks like a blur... or blocking of pixels. Do your research and make sure they have all the correct connections for your perripherals... My father in law bought an LCD and didnt know about component, HDMI, or composite cabling.

TECHNICALLY that is correct, but you have to put it in perspective. Plasma's measure their life span by looking at how many hours until the set is 50% of its original brightness. Most new plasmas are rated at 60,000 hours plus. That means if you watched TV for four hours a day, every single day, it would take over 41 years to reach this milestone.

As far as burn-in, if you watch your settings for the first 100 hours or so (ie don't crank brightness and saturation all the way up) you'll be just fine.

Also, remember on LCD's screen's you can get "stuck" pixels and many manufacturers consider that "normal" unless you have larger clusters of them or more than a certain amount of them per square inch.

Last but not least, yes it was ABT I was talking about. Awesome prices and service. Also, especially if you are putting together a package or are a frequent customer, the prices are negotiable.

yes most of the time they will match the price of any other place.. so if you come in with an add from an online store or whatever they will match it.

LCD all the way. I have a 37" LCD, and I checked the plasmas too. They are far more prone to reliability issues.

Plasma no question, especially if you are looking at 50". You will have a new TV in the next 5 years anyways so why spend more for an LCD. I have a panny 42" plasma has been great.

I have 1- 42" Hitachi Plasma HDTV and 1- 42" Aiwa EDTV Plasma and 1 - 27" Sony Bravia LCD. I prefer the more natural colors of a Plasma. The LCD is great for the bedroom since it doesn't get direct sunlight.

I've got a 46" Sony rear LCD, I've had it for about a year now, and I am very please with it.

And because I am a dork here is a picture of it.

They have color TVs nowadays????

I'm still waiting for the prices to drop even further. My gut says that there is another price drop coming for the holidays and if the economy is slipping, as some think, they will be hard pressed to sell the units (doesn't appear that there is a 'hot' new electronic item that will carry the holiday season).

BTW I see the rear projection models are cheaper - are these better values if you do not care that the box is bigger? I currently have a 6 year old 55" Mitsubishi big box TV. It is fine in the corner of the room. Of course the other corner is better (where the fish tank is!)

We purchased a 42" Samsung t4254 plasma 3 months ago. I made sure I picked the best picture in our price range, my GF hates LCD with regular movies and such, she feels like shes watching a computer game. Too pixely she says :P

Im very happy with our plasma so far, even netflix movies look half way decent for streaming media...

My rear projection LCD isn't all that big -- it is only about 14" deep.

Dlp is the best for gamers and the picture is hands down the best analog and hd look you can get, lcd has alright analog and there hd is kind of hazy put next to a dlp, Plasma's analog looks like sh?? but there hd looks good. If your going to but a tv on the wall I would go with a plasma but with plasma"s you get what you pay for. I see every kind of tv I fix your cable and hsd. A lot of plasma owner's don't like there analog, "to grainy" ON THE CHEAP PLASMA'S. Lcd,dlp and plasmas are getting better every day. http://www.dlp.com/hdtv/default.aspx

Steve makes a great point - especially with plasmas you get what you pay for!
I'm not a fan of DLP (I have a 63") because of the noise the color wheel makes over time.

Again, I have DLP, a top of the LCD, top of the line plasma, and I even have a SXRD projector. Display the same HD signal on all of them and the plasma blows everything away.

Also, like Steve said, it depends on what your going to watch. Especially when you get over 50", HD is a MUST!

Forgot about that that is one downfall noise of the color wheel makes over time. My mitsubishi is two years old I forked over 3400 dollars for it. I'm going to be getting a new house so I'm going to put the mits in the basement and I'm going to get a plasma On the wall,in wall speakers and stereo stuff in a closet. so my small house looks a little bit bigger

Or you could spend the money now and not have to buy another TV in 5 years... :rolleye1:

I thought my picture (LCD) was superior to DLP when they had the two models side by side in the store.... I think your best bet is to go to a specialty store like ABT or The Little Guys or Tweeter and look at the sets right next to one another...

My only hangup with the plasmas is still the burn in.... If you happen to burn it playing a game it wont be covered by any warranties that im aware of... If a plasma company would warranty against image burn I would definitely get a plasma...

i have a samsung 42" edtv plasma and love it. I play the HD stuff on it and its clear as hell. Theres at least 3 different types of burn in protection on it so thats not a problem. Ive had it for about a year and a half and watch it constantly...and I play a TON of xbox 360 on it for that same amount of time with no problem..it has a game mode on it.

i was just at sears and bestbuy and was told that the burn in on the plasma is only cause when there is a frozen picture on the screen for a prolonged period of time. how true is this?
