OT Radon

Okay,LOL.

I understand ,no problem here. I was just refering to building codes not that no one here is incapable of understanding what the cause and effects are.(i.e- If the OP is in the town of Camillus I wasn't sure if anyone in this thread would no if venting through a window was in some code violation. Some homes can be seperated in mere feet from one another. Is it allowed to be vented through the basement wall, honestly, I dont know about the town of camillus. When I went through this ,I was in the town of Cato;where it was allowed.Camillus may say the vent stack has to be vented through the roof.Dont know, but it maybe worth a phone call to avoid costly do-overs.

FWIW, went through this 3-4 years ago and agree theres nothing more to it than a simple fan wired to a light switch, sealing all cracks in the slab& walls, sump pump enclosure(did mine with plexiglass.Simple inline monitor.
Though I realize some folks might not have the time or want to go through the hasle.
Average quote I got for above mechanicals ,material + labor was coming in around $1500.

Im not saying go get a building permit and blah blah, just pointing to the fact the phone call is free and a safe play.Your not leagally tied to anything but at least you know a bit more about the costs and labors involved in quoting out vs diy.

Hope this makes more sense.

Building codes, building permits, building inspectors... ARGHHHHH!!!

More beer needed!! :beer::beer:

radiation is not a good thing. I would probably have a pro look at it and describe the solution. Then decide if it is something you would tackle on your own.

Cully, did you ever get anything installed?

We did a test, and it wasn't good: 16. My problem is that one half of my basement is dirt floors.

dont they usually cover exposed dirt areas and ventilate to remove the radon ? i have heard that is a build up situation but may be wrong . what do they recommend for a solution ? i have never really dealt with it but know of people that have and i will check on what the procedure was . years ago it was never even checked for and people turned out just fine ,im thinking its a bit on the scammish side if you ask me but i will find out tomorrow and see what the procedure is for containment and removal as its a slow build up to the best of my knowledge .

I made sure I had a radon test done when I got my house. Luckily I did because the level was around 6.

we made the sellers but in the ritigation (sp) system. The company added a fan, sealed all the floors, and installed a tube in my basement that goes outside and up the side of my house.

House is 1300 sq foot and the thing cost about $1300. I can give you the name of the company if you'd like. Let me know and I will check when I get home.

All is well since then.

We knew the sellers and they gave us such a killer deal (anyone who's seen my garage or workshop will agree) that I wasn't about to hold them over the fire for another $1500. Now, had I not known them, it would certainly have been a contingency on our part.

System is going in this coming Monday. Worst part was emptying out the crawl space after we had just moved all of our stuff in....

Cully, when they are done, would you mind snapping a couple pics of the setup? I don't have $1500 to drop on this so it will likely be DIY.

My big problem is the old side of the basement is 130 years old and consists of a full height section and a crawlspace section and is probably 700 square feet. The new side is about 650 square feet and has a concrete floor and is likely not the source of the problem. Anyways, we'll see...
