OT: Relay For Life Dive-A-Thon in honor of SCUBA Instructor Jerri Burch

NeveSSL

Got tubes?
Hi all. Here is the basic info:

From Bev Corlew, SCUBA Instructor at MTSU On Friday, September 19, 2008 we lost a very special friend and member of the dive community. Jerri L. Burch, YMCA Platinum Instructor Trainer/ NAUI Instructor Trainer lost her long battle with breast cancer.

Jerri taught SCUBA classes as an adjunct professor for the past 16 years at Middle Tennessee State University. Jerri loved diving and in the past 16 years as a dive instr uctor has touched many lives.

Beginning at 4:00 pm on Friday October 1 7, we are holding a Relay for Life 24-Hour Dive-A-Thon in Jerri's memory. All proceeds will be donated to the Warren County Relay for Life.

The goal is to have divers on a rotating schedule so we can have someone in the water at all times for a 24 hour period. Divers are encouraged to solicit donations from family and friends. Dive shops and other university programs are asked to formulate a team of divers representing your shop or school.

All donations will be collected the day of the event. Checks should be made payable to the American Cancer Society â€"œ Memo: Warren County Relay for Life

Tanks, BCs, and Regulator systems will be provided.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please help us make this event a success and get as many donations as possible to help in the prevention of breast cancer.

I will be participating in this and wanted to extend the invitation to MTRC. I know several members are divers and may be interested in doing this. This event will be held at the Alumni Memorial Gym pool, FWIW.

I was thinking we could possibly get a dive team together to do this and all go play on the bottom of the pool for a good cause. :) I have not dedicated to a block yet, so the time is a bit flexible, although I am thinking later in the evening on Friday, maybe around 10PM or 11PM.

Just let me know if you'd like to participate or make a donation! Jerri was my instructor last semester and was a blast to have SCUBA with.

Thanks!

Brandon

Hey Brandon,

I just recently moved into town from Knoxville. I'm a ETRCer :) Now I'm here in Nash going to school.

But I would love to participate in this. It'd be a great opportunity to get to know a few of you guys for a great cause. Could you PM me any extra info.

I will be out of town til next weds, but I'll be able to check my pms.

Thanks,
Donny

Welcome, Donny! :)

FWIW, I'm pretty sure Chris (fishdoc) at least went diving with Jerri. Not sure if he had her as an instructor or not, though.

I'd love to PM you extra info, but thats all I've got. :)

If you have any questions, please do feel free to ask either on here or through PMs.

Brandon

of course the winnings go to the charity in the name of the winner. The air thing would put another twist on it.

That stinks:( I know she has been sick for a long time. She was not my primary instructor (Mike and Bev were) but she was my instructor on my first dive and I dove with her several times after that and I feel privelidged to have done so. She was/is a legend in the diving world. She will be missed. Thanks for LMK Brandon.
Chris

As I said in our convo Brandon, I'll be there depending on the time.

Even if it is in a pool, getting some more time underwater can't be a bad thing and its for a good cause.

Might I suggest posting an address that people could send donations to if they can't make it during the event... or find out if there is a way to give a pledge of support that you guys can then collect later. It seems there might be some folks willing to support you here, but possibly not take the 45 minute drive to the 'boro late on a Friday to watch.

Hi all.

Thanks for the replies. Underwater card games sounds awesome, Wayne. :)

I should also mention that you will need to be a certified diver to come and participate in the pool, but certifications are not required for donations. :)

Donations will be taken up the day of the dive. If you would like to donate and are not participating, you can send the donation to me or give it to anyone who may be coming.

Personally, I would like to show up as MTRC and represent! I really would like to come as an MTRC group. We will try to think of some fun stuff to do in the pool as well other than the already mentioned possible card games. :)

Thanks all!

Brandon

Hey Brandon, Sounds like a fun time. Let me know how to sign up with you guys.

Also, it says that tank, bcd, and regulators will be provided. Do you think they will have fins and masks too? I don't have anything here. I will even have to go buy swim trunks :D

Donny.

Pandarian... I highly doubt that would include fins and mask, but maybe someone has an extra set. In fact, I do, but if Moriah comes along with me, she might be taking a dip with a snorkel too. If she decides to work, you're in business...

Hope you can dig out a c-card...

Can non-certified folks hop in with snorkels? Just asking since I will likely be accompanied...

Not sure, Brian... I'll check.

Donny:

Fins, masks, and weight belts will not be included, but I'm pretty sure we could find you some... if nothing else its just a pool... so you can crawl if need be. j/k

As far as signing up... to be honest, I'm not really sure what to do. I guess just post on here that you'd like to come and we'll go from there. I don't believe there is anything formal other than us reserving a time block.

And speaking of such, does anyone have any preferences?

I'm thinking around 10PM or 11PM for an hour or two on Friday night. I think two hours would be pretty cool.

What do you all think? And who for sure is interested in going?

Also, how many of you are planning on donating?

Thank you guys so much! MTRC ROCKS!

Brandon

I vote Friday night too... and two hours is just fine with me. If a little earlier is open, that'd be fine too, but I'm sure they need people later more than earlier.

Yeah, I was thinking later might be better for them as well.

Maybe I'll come back and do another one at 3AM. :D

Brandon

I'm fine with late or late late night as well. This sounds like it will be a great time. Let me know if you can find anybody willing to let me borrow some mask, fins, and weights. If somebody has a set I can borrow, then I'll go buy a pair of trunks. Its kinda funny that I brought my c-card, but not a pair of swim trunks. :D

I think we should be able to drum something up. Just like reef equipment, Wayne has a small surplus of masks and snorkels... I was there when he bought them. If nothing else, its just a pool, so you may have to "walk" around if we can't find any fins. ;)

I'm sure someone may have a pair there for you to borrow. We'll work something out. :)

And I've got an email out about snorkelers and a 10PM to midnight time slot. :)

Brandon

Ok, we are officially down for the 10PM to Midnight slot on Friday night.

Also, we are clear for snorkelers.

Bev said by all means bring stuff to do. She will also try to have a few things on hand to play with, not sure what just yet though. :)

Brandon

I will see if the poker chips sink does anyone have plastic cards? I use to have some but way too many kids have lost them.

Please tell Mike and Bev I wish I could be there Brandon. I'll be thinking about you guys.
Chris
