OT: sick dog

well I came home today and my dog had made a giant mess from both ends in her crate

I cant think of anything she would have gotten into EXCEPT tank water (I'd been working on my tank all week as you all know)

anyways, has anyone ever had a dog get into tank water (yes I know about the guy whose dog died after drinking zoanthid water)

just wondering if this is a symptom I'd expect from a dog that drank some salt water

if that's not the cause I cant think of anything else

do dogs just occasionally get the runs like people do? is it just a random thing that'll pass....it appears to be a 1 pass illness...she seems fine now

it'd break my heart if I made her sick by not blocking off my tank water

I am no vet...and never had my dog get into the tank water, however, I would guess that it's not the tank water. She might be curious and take a sip, but I wouldn't think she would keep drinking enough to make her sick. Also, I think if she was very sick, she'd be mopy and not seem fine.

And yes, dogs occasionally get the runs for no apparent reason.

when i was filling up my tank for the first time, my cat fell in during the night.
he was very very thirsty afterwards...
but it was only salt water. i didn't even have sand in yet.

i don't think the dog could stand to drink enough of the salt water to do anything other then make them barf.

Dogs get viruses just like people. We just took our dog to the vet because we didnt know this. FYI, you can catch some viruses from dogs, as I did. If she is acting ok and eating, I wouldnt worry too much. But I am not a vet either just a guy that wasted 50 bucks cuz his dog had the sniffles.

yeah I called the vet and she said to keep an eye out...Im just trying to determine the source

I am also assuming that one taste of salt water would be enough to make her stop drinking

hmm...she's sleeping now, so we'll see how it goes from here

I think she's got it all out of her system

Some times any change to a dogs or cats diet can upset thier stomach. If you changed dog treats, food. Or gave extra treats yesterday, she could be dealing with today. As long as it doesn't look like blood was in the "mess" and they are alert and active now. I would say what ever was upsetting her tummy is passed.

Not trying to get too personal, but you mentioned in the other thread digestive issues and flax oils. Dogs can catch your gi bugs as well as cats can catch respiratory bugs. That always makes me wonder when people let thier dogs drink from the toilet. But anyway, could he have caught a gi bug from you and/or got into the flax oil?

thanks for the suggestion Roy

my GI troubles are Crohn's disease...so nothing to catch/relay there!

OS: Im not embarassed at all about the Crohn's, it cases enough problems for me, I dont need to add embarassment to the list

Have you seen a lot of rabbits in your yard as of late? For some reason, some dogs like to eat waste of other animals and there is a virus transmitted via rabbit pellets that is making a lot of St. Louis dogs sick.

My parents bulldog has caught onto that fad. ie. Eating rabbit pellets. She never did it before about two months ago and when she gets into the back yard she cant get enough of them. Its nasty and has limited her outside time.

thanks for the heads up...I have never seen a rabbit around here, but have seen plenty of coons...anyways I'll check out the yard for pellets

My jack russell is very sensitive and seems like when I do alot of rearranging her nerves get shot.. they get acid in their tummy whrn they get nervouse or eat grass to settle their indigestion. this in turn causes them to vomit it out or.. of curse.. come out the other end.... Im not sure whats in the grass but whatever it is Ive seen lots of dogs do this and my vet said their is some type of chemicle in the grass that helps settle them altho the way it does it, isnt exactly the way wed like...LOL

well, the illness is back, so I'll monitor for a few days and call the vet monday

bummer...she was fine thursday, but last night started up again with the same stuff
