The letters all have to be there though - that is the key. Your mind interprets the words based on that.

To a degree - but there are different methods. Really, the key to speed reading is taking in more information - accurately - in the same "amount" of looking at the text. Basically, seeing more words in a sweep versus reading on a word-by-word basis.
