OT: suggestions for a sub-woofer

huh, I had no idea the HSU's were more affordable than some of the others.
I just happened upon a great deal on a small Velodyne and bought it.

As you can see, there are several well regarded subs out there.
You might even want to take a look/listen to Paradigm, but some of the brands mentioned here are most likely better.

Good luck

have you checked out the new home line from JL Audio? I have always been a velodyne fan, but these jl subs are pretty insane.
I dont think theyre under 1k though.

Velodyne are great if you've got the $$$ to buy them. A very reasonably priced and really fantastic sound and quality as mentioned before on here are the HSU research subs. They've got some insane subs, and from a lot of research a long time ago on avsforum, they were considered very highly, especially for their prices.

Must be nice to have the $$$ to spend on some speakers. I'm just using 1980s McIntosh floorstandings, but man these things sound fantastic.

I'll second HSU. I have the vtf-3HO with turbo charger. Its a huge sub (form factor), however it cannot be touched for the money.
