OT: tremor/quake in Eastern NY

Bummer! I didn't feel a thing!

I did feel the one that was in the area sometime between '96 and '98, can't remember exactly when. I was sitting on the couch with our cat when I felt it. The cat slept right through it. So much for my cat having a sixth sense about that stuff!
 
My chair started wiggling and I thought it was a really strong breeze from the open window, but then I realized EVERYTHING in the room was wiggling.

I remember an earthquake happening when I was a kid (like, 5 or 6), and for some reason being convinced that the fish in a nearby lake had caused it.
 
I felt it down here in Binghamton. It was crazy we're working on remodeling a room and the person upstairs thought I was taking out a wall and the house was coming down. It shook more than I have ever felt one here before.

WOW... that is a POWERFUL quake if it was able to move desks on the 2nd floor all the way up to teh 3rd floor!!

Sorry, cound't resist. We've had a few quakes out here (SoCal) recently. :beer:
 
Difference being... a lot of buildings in Cali are built with quakes in mind. Here, not so much. How strong have the recent quakes out there been?

When I started being rocked back and forth at my desk my first thought was that the crew tearing up the road outside must have hit a gas line (aka explosion) as that's the only thing I could think of that would move our large concrete building. Strong winds don't move us at all. Then the thought processed that I would have also heard an explosion that serious. So automatically one starts to sit and wonder "what is wrong with me". lol That's when I got up and had to ask if anyone else felt it. Come to find out... others were feeling it and too scared to say something in case no one else had.

If there's anything that sticks out with any of that grammar that anyone would like to play around with... have at it. :bum:

This one was in Canada. I felt it pretty good here. Measured about a 5.4, not too bad for this region. They are pretty common believe it or not. The Adirondacks get a few a year just not this size. My family in San Diego are laughing at us because we all got really excited about it and they are like ummm, that is nothing to be excited about at all.
 
Yeah, they actually reduced it to a 5 last I read. Here's my outlook on it. Even though it did barely any damage, it's still a significant event in our area. Each region/state/continent has their own little typical events. To us a huge snowstorm is no big deal because we're prepared for it because of where we live. If your family experienced a huge snowstorm in San Diego it'd be a big thing to them. I'm always amused when I read about states further south shutting down due to winter weather because up here it's so normal that we take a risk of getting fired if we try calling in due to snow on the roads. lol Ya just put on an extra layer, get out the shovel/snowbrush and carry on as usual. Down there they don't have the equipment/salt/sand needed to deal with it so it shuts things right down but it can still be amusing to us to see them get all worked up about it. Same for earthquakes on the West Coast, they're prepared for those things because it is a way of life for those that choose to live there. I can't imagine the chaos that would ensue if we actually had a more serious quake around here.

I understand to others it's insignificant, if I lived in a quake prone zone I'd feel the same way. I'm still going to talk about it and ask a gazillion more people if they felt it though. :D I've been living in NY for years and have never felt before what I felt today.
 
We received tons of calls to 911 today asking if it was an earthquake. Makes me laugh that people fell it is an emergency to call in and ask rather than turning on their computer/tv/radio/etc to find out.
