OT: USB TV tuner for a PC/Laptop...

Hi Everyone,

A few months ago, my family got rid of our DVR service through Time Warner Cable to save some money. We are currently getting basic cable.

We've come to miss the digital video recorder feature, and that has led me to look into the ability for a computer to record TV shows.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with USB type TV Tuner "cards" for PC computers? I would have to use a USB type card, as I don't have any open slots in my laptop.

I'm currently looking at the "Avermedia Avertv Hybrid Volar Max."

I am running XP Pro.

Any suggestions/comments are welcomed!

Thanks,

Steve

I've only used internal tuners in the past. I've been a big fan of the Hauppauge line. They have some USB tuners available. Although the one your looking at has some decent reviews.

For software I've used SageTV for the past 4 years and like the features, very easy controls for DVR functions. MythTV is an open source program, haven't used it my self but understand it also pretty good.

I am using an Avermedia HD OTA Tuner in my Media Center and have been very happy. No experience with the USB but keep us posted I am curious.

Steve, I have a USB capture/tuner. I forgot the brand but its brand new. You can borrow it if you want. Get ahold of me. I also have an agp ATI All In wonder tuner in case you have a tower for this application. If your looking for good online pricing for this type of stuff go to newegg.com, there is plenty of owner reviews there as well.

Hey Kozmo, thanks for the offer, but I'd rather not borrow computer hardware from someone. With my luck I'd break the USB connection with the weight of a cable line, or smush some capacitors forcing it into a tower.

I'm going to do a little more research, then try one out!

Thanks,

Steve
