OT, woman got into a car accident

The fact that they should have insurance, is a no brainer.
You folks that think if you get hit by somebody, that your car will be repaired with all new parts are sadly mistaken.
Used, after-market, reconditioned parts are the norm with ins. companies these days. Your car could be less than a year old and it still won't necessarilly get you new parts. Some companies are better than others, but all are out to repair your car as cheaply as possible. I was in the collision repair business for over 20 years and I've seen it all.
The fact is, if you get hit by somebody, it's going to cost you something one way or another.

1300 is pretty cheap. I was in an accident at the end of March. My bills at the hospital, car repair and rentals where over $25,000 at my current rate that is over 30 years of coverage. I'm no math expert but those numbers just work in the favor of having insurance.

Sorry about your accident Rob, but I'd have to say $25,000 would be on the low end of the scale with an accident with injuries.

I was an EMT for 5 years, and it seems the worst accidents that I went to were uninsured moterists, some didn't even have a licence. A helicopter ride alone to come pick you up at the accident, was over $4,000 back then. Not to mention the surgical team waiting for you at the hospital.

It sucks to know that I'm paying for all the uninsured moterists every month. But I wouldn't want to be stuck with hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills either, so I write that check faithfully.

And always have unisured coverage.
I really suggest some of you have a chat with your agents, find out what your policies call for in the repair of your vehicle, should the need ever arise.

No, you would just declare bankruptcy. If you can't afford insurance (presumably the only reason you'd not have it), you probably can't afford to defend a lawsuit either. Your credit would suck for a long time, however.
(sorry I dont know how to do quotes)

I think the bankruptcy laws prevent you from claiming in event of uninsured accidents

Well theres nothing that you can do. I know from experience. I clipped someone on my friends motorcycle when they pulled out if front of me. scratched the rear bumper with the foot peg and nicked the quarter panel. Of course he didnt have any insurance. I found out after I had give her my information. Well I called the lady and offered to pay for repairs and plus for the trouble. Two days later I got a quote for 2700. I had no leverage at all. getting in an accident without insurance is worse than getting pulled over without it. Other than the obvious reasons you WILL get letters from the state saying that you are required to get SR-22 for 4 years. You are then upgraded to a High risk driver and then have to go to specific insurance companies. If you dont get insurance then your license will be suppended. You also cannot have a lapses with coverage after it starts. It really sucks. My insurance was three times what it is now. And it wasnt even my fault.

Very good point. Look closly at your policy and ask questions. I had no idea that my personal injury coverage was only 10K. That was eatten up very quickly and the hospital I was taken to was out of network. Luckly my major medical was willing to cover it as in network since I really had no choice where I went while I was strapped to a back board. Still cost me more out of pocket than the increase in premiums should I have had better coverage. Fortunitly the lady didn't want to sue me. I would have been really up the creek.

For sure. That bill was 3K for my car, a couple hundered on the rental. The rest was for the ride to the ER, x-rays, MRI's and an overnight stay with some consults in the AM. Had I been more seriously injured I would have really been in deep. And medical is another area where the insured pay for the uninsured.

As everyone has said...GET INSURANCE!

What ever you do make sure you get her to sign a release form saying you have done your part and she suffered not injurys (get it notorized then say good bye or she'll could come back later possibly for her injurys since you paid once. cover your own BUTT also.

I know this thread is getting old, but I was just rear-ended on 90 heading into the city....sitting at a dead stop in traffic. The lady behind me never even slowed down. So I got hit by a tahoe, and pushed into a silverado. Talk about a bad day. ANYHOW, the girl gave the cop a fake insurance card. So now I got an '05 with 13,000 miles that won't be the same again.

I know you're not on here to get burned, but you have to expect it if you're gonna post. People without insurance deserve whatever is coming to them. You people have blatent disregard for the law and drivers without ins. deserve to have it stuck to them. You're lucky to get off at 1300. It cost ME 500 in deductible to get hit at no fault of my own...why shouldn't you pay 1300?

What'd you spend on this hobby last month? Put it towards insurance~

Later
