Our 20L progression thread

Just got back from Vegas... you guys are making great progress! Those clowns might one day want a host anemone, although not needed. Are you guys going to end up getting one? Just wondering, I am sure you might have plans for your tank, but each day brings new ideas! Ttyl!

Justin

We arent getting an "anemone" but we will be getting hammer coral and things like that which the clowns can host.

Okay so in the past week we have quarantined our clownfish. THey had serious problems with brooklynella but after a freshwater dip and now getting baths of formalin they seem to be doing much better. We had to build a little 10 gal quarantine tank so the 12x12 cube project had to be put aside for now. Maybe it will resurface later.

Also we are going this morning to pick up a royal gramma. We are worried about the fish hiding all day but I guess we are going to take the chance.
While we are at the LFS we will be buying a few turbo snails due to the recent hair algae outbreak in the tank, alhthough it already appears to be under control. I guess the snails and crabs really worked hard last night. And finally we are gonna end up picking up the pink zoanthids we have been eyeing for weeks. Hopefully it is still there.

Alright here are the pics of our new addition...

Classic man, thats a great shot!
Thanks! If only it was in focus more. He did that about 10 times the first 5 minutes in the tank. He isn't doing it anymore though.

Btw, we LOVE this fish. He isn't hiding much and as soon as we put him in the tank he swam around and instantly found his spot. He seems to really be happy in here.
I do have one confession to make. There were quite a few gramma's at the store, and there was one who was a tad smaller that had been in the store for 2 weeks. He looked very pale and beat up though. This was one of the bigger ones but had just arrived in the shipment they recieved yesterday. I asked the guy at the LFS to feed him and he brought out frozen and flake food. Our gramma went after the flakes instantly before the frozen could thaw so I decided he would be fine. He looks so healthy and bright... lets hope everything stays well.

ahh yes, an update! Well, let me start off by saying there is a cat 4 hurricane coming straight for new orleans. I have anxiety problems as it is, but the fact that I have sunken this much money into livestock and whatnot, I just can't imagine what it would be like losing all of this to a power outage. So, today we are going to petsmart and getting some battery powered air pumps. And I think I will be setting up a power inverter/car battery to power the tank untill it runs out of juice. Wish us luck.

Alright, so our clowns went through their final formalin dip 2 days ago. They look amazing. The smaller one was the really sick one and he wouldn't eat since we got him. He now eats aggressively and is very playful with the other clownfish. They both look great and show all signs of great health. 2-3 more weeks in the quarantine tank and they should be ready to be added back into our tank.

Also, since our last update we have added a few things. For starters. We bought a new colony of zoanthids on a large branch rock and I fragged it. We used some aquastik and added the fragged branches to the other rocks around our tank. Here are some pictures of the zoanthids on our rocks.

While we were scowering the local fish store's tanks we saw a ultra green yuma polyp. It was pretty large for one polyp but they wanted 20 dollars for it. I wantyed it bad and jaime did too but something was saying, wait and go read about them first. So, I vowed to come back and get it if we read about it and it was okay. A day later we went back to the LFS to get it and it was gone! So off to a different LFS we went, and we came across 2 big cups of ricordea some green some red. We got a polyp of green and a polyp of red. Placing them was NOT so easy though. We kept putting them on the rocks and they would JUMP off. Finally I got fed up and it was nearing time to go eat so I superglued them to the rock. Here is a pic of the red's first placing.

Feeding time was around the same time I was messing with the tank so when the thawed out mysis hit the water everyone was going crazy, too. Jaime was spotfeeding some things and we were able to feed all of our newly found brittle stars. I got a pic of one scowering the rocks one day. I cant believe how m any of these we have and they just appeared out of nowhere.

I got the idea of feeding a mysis to the green ricordea, boy did that go well!

And finally we placed them in a different location and were done with it. Here is their final placement.

So, like I said, wish us luck with the hurricane and our fishes. Hopefully everything will be fine!

Good luck pal. For reals, I hate that power outage crap, it hurts US more than anyone else. Say, you know anyone with an old school VW for sale?

Tank looks awesome! But I agree... a blue background would really make it "pop"!

Good luck with the hurricane, I know how it is... I live by the beach here on the gulf coast of FL (tampa area). One of the first things I bought for my tank was a nice generator from Home Depot! Sure... it was $700, but it will pay for itself the first time its needed! Just get a big enough one to run your entire tank (maybe not lights...), a window A/C unit (I keep one in the garage... just incase), your fridge, a TV and some lights in the house.

Chris..... Jaime? You guys ok?
Yes we are okay. Jaime went with her family to florida (fort walton) and I went to pine bluff arkansas. We left the tank with battery powered air pumps and decided to see how long it could last. However the power going out killed the air conditioning and once that went down the 110 degree heat index took over. So I am sure I am going home to a cooked tank :-(

More importantly, we have no idea if our house is okay or not. Some people are saying that our area is okay with just some wind and tree damage but noone knows about our specific area. We can't get back either. So we are just kind of waiting it out.

But we are alive, that is the most important thing!

man that is super nice of you. I didnt expect everyone to be so helpful through all of this. Who knows, the tank COULD have survived. I will post the updates when i get them. thanks for all the help and support guys!

wow at least you are safe. Fish come second of course, althought it's a hard one. I told my mom maybe we could get new couches,etc.. :)

Anyway let us know when you get back. I heard they won't let us in till monday, and then you have to leave and can't come back for around a month! How much does that suck?
