Our Mini 425 Ocean

Looks great Eric! Maybe i can get down there for the frag meet. :) I just did a similar upgrade to my 120. Go check it out~

How silent are your Reeflo pumps ?

How silent are your Reeflo pumps ?

Hi, just wanted to know how silent your reeflo pumps are. i've been wanting to replace my 2 pumps with only one of these babies for a while now. what is really the noise level ? thanks for sharing the info.

Did the old fiberglass rod trick huh? I'm thinking of using these too...they are just the ones available from any farm supply store or HD, lowes, Menards, etc? They are all inert right?

FFrankie â€"œ You can come as my guest anytime. The club website is www.o-r-c-a.com I think THE NEXT 1 IS AT THE END OF August. Just drop me a PM if you can make it. I saw somewhere you just made a manifold. I wana see how it came out. Now I know why John was stressing them for a while, so efficient.

Ed Reef â€"œ Thanks. I am amazed how quick your tank has taken off. All the big boy additives are sure working for you,. Down the line I will need to do some research on zeovit and elos, and probidia.

Kenny â€"œ I might Head to CA for a couple weeks in August ..That reminds me I need to check some flights…

King of Spades - ..Welcome to RC. You will meet some pretty cool people here and learn a lot, just remember there’s more then 1 way to skin in a fish. At first I was impressed it was pretty quiet. I HAD A LITTLE GIANT AND IT WAS LOUDER. I THINK THE PUMP IS GETTING LOUDER NOW AFTER 6 MONTHS. I MIGHT JUST NEED TO CLEAN IT. I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO UP GRADE TO THE REEF gold series, more flow and less electric. They are great pumps for the flow and power consumption. I was thinking of using my dart for a closed loop when I upgrade and make a manifold. My tank is real quiet and I don’t think I want it in the house. Although it is quiet and a little hum adds to the affect. I am just not sure yet. I would definitely recommend the pumps. I am sure the deltec and red dragons are quite but$$$$. I think these are some of the best pumps for your bang. That is probably why everyone uses them.

JimBrody- thanks..

Lunch- You got it. I got them from Home depot

Not much to update except I have been slacking. This is no 14day Marc build. I did get a clam and it has been under the 1 light for a couple weeks now. I also connected the fuge but have not done any testing lately. I will probably take some test before my skimmer comes on line. I expect to see something with algae when the other 2 400 mh are brought on line.

Eric:

Great thread. Have been tagging along for quite some time and am learnin' a lot from you along the way.

How is the aptaisia situation? My experience is as previously described -> if you don't nip it in the bud, they will run rampant.

A bit tedious, but the most effective way to rid, IME, is to mix very concentrated kalk and inject a bit directly into their body with a syringe and a large bore needle (any friends/family in healthcare?). Works great, but need to monitor pH and stop (resume later/next day) if flux. It's also a bit cathartic to see the little bastards explode and then evaporate before your eyes.

One caveat: had a housecleaning crew quit on me after seeing my stash of syringes/needles/"white powder" [turns out that stuff like that can **** off our better halves] . . . I now keep them stored safely.

Got my aptaisia (finally now gone) on a frag from a friend. Am designing a 450 in-wall reef backing up to a temp-controlled fishroom (confiscated a single car garage) and am definitely building in a dedicated QT tank which can be taken off line with a turn of a valve. Adds volume when on-line for stability and lowers threshold to do a true 3-4 week QT with new livestock/frags; a second bulkhead for a drain would make for a very easy 15% water change for you. Maybe you can use that 75G (already drilled, would be a waste to use for RO/DI when a 32G trashcan will do just as well).

Just my 2 cents (as I have a way often making something easy much more complicated, feel free to ignore). Thanks again for the wonderful thread/Anxiously following,

Steve

Steve- I need to get back at them..I pulled some rock to make the pillars and remove the aptasisa at the same time. I have heard the same about the kalk paste from a few others. i need to get cracking on that and order some kalk.

I am always open to ideas. I think that is pretty good idea about the 75. I was trying to make use o fit but not sure if I wanted it going 24/7. That sounds like a great idea. Thanks for the input. Drop me a link if you start a build..

Eric,
It's been over 3 months since you last update, how are things going with the build.looking great so far.

Ed - a little late but thanks for the info..

redtop03 - Welcome to RC.. I have been lurking in the background lately.. Not much going on with my tank. Finishing the rest of the floors in my house and enjoying my son. Soon i am going to get back to it when I order some base boards I am going to try and finish my mantle. As soon as i get back to it I will post some pics.

hey eric tank is looking good man, its nice to see im not the only one that has been MIA for a while on here. just letting a few people i know on here that kris wray formerly with reefermadness is now back up and running as sting wray corals , and is definitely getting the good quality corals that reefermadness used to get when he was there if you or anyone else is interested pm me and i will get you his email address

yea I kinda figured you was spending time with the little one:)

did you build a new house or remodel?

I love the office/fish room idea, having both sides viewable.
don't know how you'll get anything done in the office for watching the tank;)

ED I am still breeding aptashia...heheh I got a few pepermint shrimp and they seamed to have helped a bit. I really do want to try another copper band but am waiting till i get a QT setup. I also heard ther are some sea slugs that might eat it to. That is my next livestock order a decent cleaner crew

Tattoreef Thanks. I want to start turning my fo into a mixed reef soon.

Redtop03 I bought my house 3 years ago. They didn't want to close the room in for me when I purchased it so I figured i would do it myself. It is crazy because I bought the extra options for bigger tiles, extra padding for carpet and I ripped it all out..hehhhahaha When I sit in my office I think of all the stuff i have to do to complete the tank. I just want to put some frags in it so in a year I can have some decent size corals. need to get started on stocking but been patient to get my water in check.

Hi Chuck, Hope your recovering ok. I have been super busy with work around the house and my little one. Things have slowed down at work for a little. I have tried to squeeze some time in for the tank. I have been working on finishing my garage with fuge and skimmer. I also am going to finish the mantle for the living room side of the tank ASAP. I will give some updates in a little. I cant load my current pics so these are a little old. I will try and get the camera stuff straightened out soon.

I finally swapped out my 75 fuge for my old 150. I didn’t like having an extra pump to pump water from my sump to fuge. H20 pointed that out to me a while ago. Since I want to keep electric reasonable I thought I would do it all by gravity. My old fuge would fill up with a lot of poop, and it was extra work. For the 1st year of my FO with LR I have not been running a skimmer. My plan was to have all the drains feed a 20 mini sump 1st and then drain to my 150 fuge. The mini sump would also have a bulkhead at the bottom to feed my marlin pump for my skimmer. If my skimmer is off the water would just drain to the fuge. From my fuge it drains to my 150 rubber maid sump. From there my dart pumps everything back to the display.

It seamed to work ok. The 20 mini sump was also trapping some deitris, I had filter floss in but noticed pods were all over the floss. It would be easier to clean it than my fuge, I could just vacuum the bottom of the 1st sump with out having a lot of build up in the fuge. Well everything flowed good for a couple weeks until I started playing with my skimmer, and realized some new issues. I have lost over 40 gallons to my floor twice, not to mention a few other spills. It does make more sense to have equipment in the sump if an accident occurs.

The skimmer runs ok for a bit, then the water level in the skimmer would go up for no apparent reason and my 5 gallon nog bucket would overfill and drain on the floor.
My issues with the skimmer are that I noticed sometimes the dart pump (Return Pump) would not keep up with the demand of the marlin pump for the skimmer. So that might be giving me some trouble. When the skimmer pump turns on it almost empties the 20 gall to where there is about ¼ above the bulkhead to suck in air. I never did change the gatevalve on the skimmer that I got used that had a 45 glued to it. I remember reading that if the drain is restricted you could have some trouble with the skimmer. But I need to first address the fact the dart cant pump enough water for the marlin pump.

With all the trouble with the skimmer and losing some extra room in the garage, and water on the floor I though it almost might be simpler to have a baffle in the 150 Rubbermaid and keep all my equipment in the sump. I cant just put a bucket and skimmer in the sump because of the pump issue. I see 2 options.
A: I might have to set up another pail with some holes in the bottom so the skimmer pulls more pump than my returns it can feed from the larger sump.

B: Should I just have all my drains go the fuge and the feed the skimmer from there? My fuge will fill with poo and I might skim some pods. Maybe I am just getting carried away.

I was looking at Melves site again and I think sometime next year I will make an acrylic sump. Wright now I don’t want to shell out the money or time, but I want hook up my skimmer to bring down my nitrates and for some extra oxygen. I also posted the same info on the refugium good and ugly thread.

Another upgrade down the road would be If all else fails I would love to replace the dart with a gold barracuda and put a 40 where the 20 is. I think that would resolve some issues and then leave me to play with the skimmer. I really wanted to get this figured out I can start on my electric in the garge. I would rather spend the money on some frags right now. hhahaha

well i see some ones been busy, i hate to hear about all of the problems , but i do agree with you on putting the equip in the sumps somehow to avoid the unwanted water changes lol, thats one of the reasons my skimmer is situated on a drilled out bucket in my sump
