which bob? i know of at least 1 you gave me

You. I bet there was more than one. We had tons of them.
(Unless the guy from NJ got most of them.) But all I know is we don't have anywhere near what we had prior to moving the rock and selling some.

I still have plenty groilla crabs. :D They are small though. When they get bigger I can catch them. I find it easier to wait for the right time and flick them off the rock onto the sand. There I can pin them against the glass and smush them. I have tried the bottle traps but they seem to be more trouble then they are worth. I have caught 1 or 2 crabs in them but they are still a pain.

I still hear popping and clicking in my tank and have yet to see a mantis or a pistol and it has been about 9 months. I do have a candy cane pistol that I bought and the clicking isn't coming from him.

Does the Pistol Shrimp you bought stay out more, or at least pick a rock to hide under that leaves him more visable?

I usually use "the CLAW" to catch my gorillas. I caught a HUGE one a couple of days ago and still have at least 3 small ones (probably more).

Quick question: How many of you have kept some/any of the urchins from your TBS?

It decided to make its home in the sand right along the front glass. I can see it all the time running back and forth in its burrow. Kind of like having an ant farm. If I can get a good pic I will post it.

I only had one urchin and it is in my sump.

Thanks for the replies!

I like the idea of waiting until its easier to just grab them, but it doesn't seem like too much work to just put a glass with a little bait in and wait. Silversides are hard to find - I live over an hour from any pet store - will a piece of uncooked shrimp work?

We used shrimp in the beginning and it worked well. Silversides just seem to have a stronger "odor" in the water and attract everything to them.

I got a total of 4 urchins from TBS and FLR. The largest one is in my sump and the other three are in the main tank. I'm trying to determine their sex, once that is done I plan to trade away 2 of them.

My coralline keeps up with them eating it, but they really like to keep my brain rock white and if I reduce it to 2 urchins hopefully that will help.

B.

PS. 53 days with no Cirolanids! I've been feeding LOTS of meaty food to the tank in the last 8 days and I should have seen some babies by now if there were any left in the tank :D

PSS. Still trying to catch my mantis, I've tried 2 different baited traps and this mantis will have nothing to do with them.

danielle, in my main tank, i have the longspine. in my otherbtanks i keep some of the black urchins for algea control

I think I took the cake with urchins. At one point, I had 30+ in my QT tank. God only knows how many were left in the main tank.
There were so many I didn't know what to do with them.
I probably took the cake with gorillas too. ;)

Brian, how can you tell the sex?

Well, supposedly when they spawn the male releases sperm which is basically just white smoke. The females release orange to reddish eggs that are larger than sperm. I'm still reading up on this and haven't found a resource for TBS urchins, but still looking.

I think I have 2 suspected males, still need to determine the other two.

I have only found two gorilla crabs, both of which are currently confined to the sump.

I was able to catch both of them within 5-10 minutes. Variation on the shot glass method :) I guess... After spotting one in the rock work, I took a snapple bottle and stuck some mysis that I had on hand. The small opening was big enough for the crab, but no fish was interested in it.

I have three urchins on my rock, I am pretty sure they are the same echinometra species of urchins that are on the TBS rock . (lucunter or viridis)-- coralline is pretty much keeping steady. Don't know if I should get rid of one someday or not.

Nirol, I can't believe you found a mantis after so long, without ever seeing it. Most people have seen theirs, even if they couldn't catch it. [/B]

Yea, I know... and still I hear clicking!

I think my bottle trap worked better when I soaked the bait in some ro/di water with a few drops of Garlic extreme...expect every other critter to try to get in there too however. The bottle trap works best with holes punched in it all over to let the bait smell out.

Nirol....yes a piece of uncooked shrimp will be fine.

Bob sent me a picture. He finally saw his pistol shrimp. What rock did that come with Bob? Tank 1, 2 or 3?
