alright this is pretty weirdd i just bought a new korilla 3 pump, and i had some really nice pulsing xenia about 5 stalks i "had" two 900 max jets and they where doin nice and now i changed the flow now i got one 900 jet and a korilla 3 and i woke up this morning and my xenia doesnt look to good at all not opening fully and looks like its dying should i take it out of my tank if its dying will dying coral mess up my parameters .. how should i go about this?

ya i just tested the ph yester days and it was 8.3-8.4 and now its sky high im gunna try and lower it wit RO water with out buffer.. but i just topped of the water the other day should i take alil water out and add as much RO with out buffer as i can to lower it?.. but if i take water out it will lower my salinity will that be alright my ph is bright purple as high as it can go i think i added toooo much buffer last top off..

What is your salinity, What brand salt are you using? I have never had to add buffer to keep my ph stable also what is your alk at?

well i did all my test for ya this morning except for ph cause i ran out of packets but the salinity is at 1.024,my alk is 0.5 meq/l, calcium is low its a 225, and 0 phosphates, and 0 nitrate...oh ya i use red sea salt... i dont like instant ocean..

my alk should be higher huh its took only 4 drops to turn yellow shouldnt it be around 7? how do i higher the alkalinity?

Low Alk, and very likely unstable PH, can def. make Xenia unhappy.

If all other parameters are in good shape, a Carbonate buffer like Seachem Reef Builder or a similar product dosed over a few days should get things back to normal.

I try and keep the alk around 8-10 dkh, or right around 3.5 meqs.

Try to get your Calcium around 380-400ish. That would help as well.

now i do dose purple up and but i havent in awhile cause it raised my ph so i was thinkin about buying suttin more concentrated like that 2 step B-IONIC stuff? so what should i use to raise the ALK? my xenia does look bettter this morning tho..

Half of the B Ionic will be a Alk. buffer, the other half is Calcium.

I'm not a big fan of Purple Up, it tries to adjust to many parameters at once, and things can get out of wack.

Raising your alkalinity: very easy: buy one big box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda for around $2, that should last you a VERY long time.

If I recall correctly, 1 teaspoon of baking soda will raise alkalinity in 25 gallons of water by 2 dKH--- roughly speaking. Add enough for 2dKH, and test the next morning to see how it effected your system, as they all vary a little bit based on actual water volume.

Baking soda is just sodium bicarbonate and it's really all you need.

Calcium is only a little bit trickier. You can get calcium chloride pellets from www.bulkreefsupply.com as mentioned above, pretty cheap.

2.5 teaspoons of the calcium chloride pellets will raise 25 gallons by ROUGHLY 50ppm.

do u have to cook the baking soda?

I've got tons of xenia in my tank meaning aprox 30-40 stalks that started from one and let me tell you, In my experience they are the hardiest of all the coral I've kept. They multiply like crazy. Over the past 4 yrs I've seen them look almost dead one day to splitting the next day. I started to cut stalks with scissors and sell them for 10.00 a head on craigs list and within two weeks I have new stalks that even have tiny pulsing tips. Xenia IMO are more effected by light quality then anything else. When the MH switches to actinick some will shrivel up to almost nothing and in 2 hours they are rite back at it pulsing away. shortly after I introduced the inital frag to my tank, I went through quite a few water quality issues with big swings that didnt seem to phase them at all.

that all said, I see you have PC lighting. What kind and how much? Do you think it could be as simple as a lighting issue? also how old are your bulbs?
