overflow for an undrillable 29 gal?

My current tank is a free 29 gallon top fin tempered glass mediocre tank, an upgrade from a 20 gallon free top fin. SO my tank is undrillable, at least according to top fin, and its full of life anyhow, i was wondering if i could fashion an overflow by drilling holes into a hang on the back type penguin filter and plumbing that to a small refugium its main purpose being to hide unsightly equipment. Anybody tried this? any info would be helpful.

Call PetSmart (I'm assuming) and have them find out for you. Usually a tank this size only uses tempered for the bottmom. It says not to drill because it will void the warrenty. I would not try to mod a hob filter. Look at Lifereef for overflows. You have a few cheaper options if you can drill the back.

I just bought a topfin 29 gallon tank from petsmart and it is not tempered. In fact I drilled the bottom yesterday. Are you sure yours is tempered? Seems odd they would make two types.

Did it come with a sticker on the bottom that said 'tempered, do not drill'? if not, then drill away. All the tempered top-fin tanks have that sticker. The last time I looked topfin only started using tempered glass in their 55s and up.

thanks for info, well i got the tank for free and it only had one sticker on it and i really don't recall exactly what it said becase i did get it for free, i just remember top fins maybe saying that. calling petsmart is a good idea though.

Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m sure the last thing in the world you want to do is to use a siphon overflow, but if you do need one I always suggest this one since it is a very solid unit:

I would immediately put a Durso on it. If you were to do that youââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll find that a Durso wonââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t fit. The solution could be a Stockman (if there is enough room).

I didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t even try a Stockman, I did this:

If that's the case, then all sides could be tempered. I have a Perfecto 55g and it had red stickers that said all 5 panels were tempered.

Arent TopFin tanks made by Perfecto? I thought I read that somewhere.

I had a free 55 that only said the bottom was tempered. I found out different as soon as I started drilling.
