overflow noise

I have an "All Glass" tank with a built in overflow and Durso pipe. The overflow has always been a bit noisey, but with a sump pump change (slightly more output), the noise is noticeably worse. I can throttle the pump back and reduce the noise, but would rather find a way to silence it at the overflow.

This isn't a gurgle. It is more like a water flow noise.

Water level in the return chamber is about 1" below that of the tank water surface.

Any suggestions?

Taller durso so the water doesn't fall. It shouldn't need to fall at all. I love overflow stirring design. I think I have pictures on the MARS site. You take the intake tube and run it to the bottom of the overflow box. The water level is still set by the height of the durso.

The reason I asked about water hieght was if your hole in the cap of the durso is to small the water will go up and down.
If your Durso is 1 1/4" pipe or less than thats why it makes more noise.
if it's a standard 1" pipe I would re make your Durso Using 1 1/4" pvc then a reducer so it fits in the 1" bulkhead you will have little to no noise you cant hear mine unless you try to hear it.
Mines 1 1/4" reduceed down to 1"
Here is an artical for you to read by the maker of the Durso stand pipe hope it helps.

I have made several of these and this artical is what answered alot of my questions

So, if I increase the height of the durso tube, it will raise the water level in the chamber? I'm not connecting the dots. Tyring to understand why this is so. However, I can try it.

I like your stirring idea.

AHAAaa!! The sliding joint in my durso was too tight to move, but I raised the "U" bend section at the top on it's slip fit about 1/2 inch. There was no change in the noise I was hearing...but, I found the culprit. The elbow at the top of the tank return next to the durso has a small pressure release drilling that was blasting into the water under the elbow: moreso with the new larger return pump. If the water level was high enough, I suppose this would be under water and create no noise at all. For now, I zip tied a piece of mesh to break the stream and voila...that noise is gone.

But now...so reminiscent of our Toyotas, the thing is so quiet (relatively) and now I hear other noises unheard before. So, how does one quiet the water flow into the sump. My return there flows into a sock.

BTW, thank you for the help here. I'm really enjoying the lower DBs.

Paul,

Just caught your post amd visited/saved the Durso site. Thank you. Great information and for the future if I decide to remake this durso. Onward now to new noises thus uncovered! LOL

Cool glad you found the culpret..
Im making a small durso tommarrow for an external overflow box for a 135 gallon tank Im building for a shop.(Can't drill tank it's tempered) Bummer
These are cool I have to make it short but also cut down the width so it fits into the overflow box.
I have a 1 1/4" in my CPR CS 100 overflow box at home

Cool! My skills are more mechanical in nature, so I envy you making this stuff. My plumbing is less than elegant, though it seems to work OK.
