The hole that is clear may or may not let enough air escape from the drain lines, so that is something to consider. As far as knowing how much volume your trying to drain, the place to start is by getting a rough guesstimate. I would take note of what return pump that I was using and look at the mfg spec for the pump to see how many gph the pump was rated at. Then I would do a lil research to figure out what my drain pipes could handle. Then I would use the headloss calculator or a similiar tool available to get an idea of how much volume that was going thru my drain lines after headloss was taken into account. The idea is to make sure that your drain lines can handle the amount of water volume that you're trying to put through them.
