Overflow pipe work

Hi I am currently sorting my plumbing for my tank. I have gone with the Dorso arrangement with the pipework going through the bottom of the tank. What valves are needed (i.e. non return, ball valves etc..) to complete the plumbing on my drain pipe/ emergency overflow pipework & return pipe work.

Thanks

Regular drain lines and emergency drain lines typically don't have any valves. You can install them, but you would only use them in some emergency where you want to keep as much water as possible it the DT while fixing an issue in the sump.

More typical is a ball valve (or better, a gate valve) on the return from the pump to fine tune flow back to the DT and or refugium.

Ron,

If I recall what I read correctly, the primary drain line in a Bean animal setup uses a gate valve to fine tune the flow in order to create a siphon and create silent (or nearly silent) operation.

Gate valves are much easier to tune than a ball valve. I went with a gate valve for the main return line, then ball valves for any other drain / return lines.

I found a good deal on them at Zoro.com

The OP stated he was using a Durso style. No gate valves are needed here.

A union and ball valve will help with disassembly if you ever need to do that. It's up to you.
