overflow size?

im getting the overfow for my 190 gallon system (dt/sump) from glass holes. i think the 1500 gph box will work but im not sure.

The glass holes overflows are nice and very easy to install. I would also consider a beananimal overflow. They are quieter and can also handle a lot of flow.

that is enough, though I would consider two of them for flow options, noise and protection. the full siphon is an excellent alternative.

I need to dig through my pictures of a system I helped a friend build. it's a 180 with two 1500 overflows. cranking some serious water through there!

im going to get the 1500gph overflow i found on there website that they recomend 10 to 15 times the dt in overflow if you have lps coral. that would be 1350 to 2025gph

most folks have 4-7 from what I've seen. 10-15x seems like a lot (using flow calculated using the head loss calculator).

Re-read #3 from the article you linked. All of your flow does not have to come from the overflow, it can be (IME it should be) from multiple sources. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket. I agree with Blurry, 4 - 7x seems to be the typically accepted flow through a sump. Get the rest of your flow through power heads or a closed loop.

In sizing an overflow I would determine the maximum I would want to flow through the sump then double it. That's the minimum size that I want my overflow to be to provide me with a bit of a safety factor in case an obstruction occurs.
