Ow! Ow! Ow!

This morning I took a pair of scissors to frag a piece of devil's hand for partrickb, so I snip a piece off and it falls down between some rocks. I reach my fingers down to grab it as it falls...and OW OW OW! A sharp pain on my finger....my urchin was in that crevice and I managed to spike myself on one of it's (non-poisonous..not a long spine urchin) spines. Worse actually was that I managed to avoid puncturing my skin but the spine went up between my finger and the fingernail! OWtch man!

I abandoned that frag to the crevice, stupid frag! Stupid urchin!

Ouch, often times I feel that getting a cut or puncture in that tender area (between the finger nail and the finger) is worse than anywhere else on my finger :(
Neosporin!

yeah keep an eye on that, I managed to poke myself with something in my tank not too long ago, probably one of those snails that makes the long hard tubes, didn't give it any matter, hand turned into a swollen mess, required oral antibiotics, nasty stuff. I need a wider tank so I can clean the glass easier now :D

For the first time I got stung by my RBTAs as well. They never really stung before but I brushed up against one (this was months ago) and when I took my arm out of the water, it felt like I was wearing a glove made of fiberglass...not really super painful, but really annoying ...hard to explain.... maybe I should have peed on my arm? (OK, that's from a episode of Friends and it was a jellyfish...but nematocysts are the same attack method) I'm sure one of my babies would have been very happy to pee on my arm for me.

I got poked by my long spine while cleaning my tank a few years ago and man it hurts more than a bee sting. The tip broke off in my finger and the more I tried to pull it off the further it went in. Now I don't get anywhere near where they are.

My sister got stung by the rose while cleaning her tank. It was black and blue through out her harm and she had to see a doctor to take care of it.

Dig it out if you can, peroxide helps too. When surfing Mexico or Central America we rub a lime or a lemon on it, that usually helps to prevent infection. Talk about OW! OW! OW!, plus it's usually 10 or so of the in the bottom of your foot.

I learn never put my hands in tank without latex gloaves anymore or while fragging. Too many itchy fingers from stings.

Just et the bulk packs from Costco/Sams.

Actually another good source is to heat up olive oil (warm to medium hot, not scolding hot), and put it on the area. Applying the oil makes it easier to pull out too. When I was in the middle east 20 years ago, I stepped on an urchin as I was going into the water. My mom heated up the olive oil and applied it. It Worked like like a charm.

Agree about the latex gloves but that isn't going to stop an urchin spine. I had one pierce through a wet suit when I was night diving in Hawaii.
