Oxymonacanthus longirostris - a week in review.

True, though I'd be tempted to put her into QT with him. Getting them to eat is the most important thing to keeping them around, IMO. I've not had any disease issues with these at all, but I think Matt's had a little. Then again, he certainly keeps his fish crowded. But getting them to eat heartily and boost their immune system is the way to go.
 
I wouldn't be able to risk her with his potential male cootiness. One who eats frozen is worth more to me than one that may or may not ever take frozen.

So... I got a video. 1 minutes worth is 1.6GB!!! I think I need to work on this some more.

Speaking of, I have the LFS guy looking out for a new male H. comes for me to pair up with my lonely, lonely female. I need to get my QT/hospital tanks ready again. :)

Where do you get those sponge filters? I can never find any locally. I have some from Aquatic Ecosystems but I'd like to get some around here.
 
Got them from Pet Solutions. Called Lee's Economy Corner Filter. I had a kazillion of them. Back in the days when seahorses only took live shrimp O.O I would put algae and ghost shrimp in a bunch of these little containers. 21 to be exact. Because that's how many days I would go on vacation for 2 times a year. My fish sitter would then just have to pull one container out a day and feed it to the seahorses.
 
any update on the filefish? i picked up a female yesterday that is picking at food, but i have only been feeding mysis and cyclops, any recommendation on mysis? i have the san fransico bay cheap kind
 
Far as mysis go, I would try Hikari first. It's a whole lot smaller than other brands and easier for their small mouths. If you can find it, do try some sort of marine egg-based food (Nutramar Ova, Sanjay used a rinsed-off roe from the Asian market), as most fish can't resist eggs. Matt has a ton of luck getting them on spirulina flakes as a first food (though mine want nothing to do with them). Once you find something they'll take, do as many feedings per day as possible (four or more, if possible) and slowly add other foods to your staple item.

Mine definately loves the eggs in the Rod's food.

She goes nuts for chopped up PE mysis. Likes them more than the Hikari or H20. I chop it up with a knife while it is still frozen.... you know, that spiffy professional chef super chop.

I use a microplane and one of those, Mini-me 2" tall cheese grater looking things. It makes two different sizes and works best for different types of flesh. But whatever I'm feeding the other preds, I take a frozen chunk and grate a little bit off for her and mix it with her other foods.

No males for me for awhile... unless it's a proven frozen food eater... I don't think I could pass that up. But I'm still working pretty hard on her and doing alot of tank care. It takes a lot of prep time to get her food going. I guess it wouldn't be twice the work, but I really want to concentrate on her.
 
well then it looks like im going to be searching for awhile, i dont have any frozen markets in the area and the only LFS i could get the tiny fish roe closed up about 6 months ago, and the ones around here dont have it...the cyclops seem too small but i will try choping up the mysis and using some garlic to get it going well on frozen, i might even try some new life spectrum flakes to see if that works...i guess i will just make the drive up to salty critter tomorrow and order some or maybe order enough that they can just ship it in the same box

awesome pics and videos! I ended up taking my pair out of my DT... They made me take out my SPS which i didnt mind but when they started going after my acans and LPS!!!

Time for them to go to my parents FOWLR tank! lol
 
LOL. I clean often to avoid having to scrap.

She is trying SO hard to eat the pellets tonight. She's picking them up and then carries them around (I'm sure you know th ebehaviour I'm talking about when a food item is too big). Even when I soften them before putting them in the tank she can't seem to eat them. She just keeps lifting them off the bottom of the tank over and over.
 
Nice, Renee! I think mine just wait. They hit the softer food first and then I see them picking at the substrate later.
