Oxymonacanthus longirostris pair enters a mixed reef environment

I have seen the "Cantelope" appearance on one or both of mine. I remember seeing it, but I didn't take notes. :-/

I haven't seen white stuff around their mouths.

I have no corals in my tank.

Hmm well if Renee's pair have shown that before it makes me far less concerned!

I'll see if I can't keep this updated with my information but the only huge difference between the two fish is that the female does get bullied by the male (although this has dropped off sharply to the point it's a rare occasion) and the female sleeps in the food clip. The male sleeps in the front corner of the glass using his 'forehead hook' to keep himself tied to the silicone bead.

I'll keep observing.

Picked up some Sustainable Aquatics Hatchery Diet. Both files went for it immediately. And with no soakong. Pellets are only .5 mm which is a great size for their wee mouths.

Hmm I'll keep that in mind...but mine won't go after anything other than food on the clip now. It has its advantages I guess...neither of them eat anything directly from the water column but I do think they still eat ova that falls to the sand bed.

For what its worth, yesterday the files did the flow change thing again. Weren't eating all that much throughout the day from what I could tell so I did my water change that was scheduled for yesterday anyways and after I switched the flow to Nutrient Transport (short pulse wave) the male started eating aggressively followed by his female. Pretty strange since I've seen that twice now.

Something to keep in mind!

That is pretty wacky. As I've noted, mine get flirty after a water change which is likely totally unrelated. Never had mine skip a meal though.

Anyone got experience with adding a new OSFF to a established one... Supposed both a female/juvenile... Cant find a healthy male on my side...

I just added a female with my established 1 year male. He was a little aggressive at first. Now I don't know if she'll make it as I don't see her eat anymore. Shes always in sleep mode in the acros. She does peck at the ground when I'm not too close to the tank, but I don't know if it's enough to where she'll survive.

Good luck Daniel. Be persistent!

My female is currently eating fresh scallops! She is just as interested in this as she is fresh salmon. I can't find fresh clams anywhere...but that's on my list of things as well.

Also, it looks like she prefers the regular Rogger's to the plus. Not sure why though!

This may sound rdiculous, but when I'm trying to get a fish to eat, I really try to get into its head. I try to use mind control and I say "mmm, yum, that lloks good, mmm, I really want to eat that. Perhaps its worth a shot if you're crazy enoug to try it.

Have you stopped taking your meds again? :lolspin:

I have actually never seen either OSFF eat ova...I always assumed they were just picking up bits off the sandbed but today a piece landed near their clip and the female stopped eating salmon (which I thought was their absolutely favorite) and dashed over and sucked down the whole chunk! It was awesome!

Normally those chunks are destroyed when they hit the water by the chomis but since I have a big trap in the tank to catch a few of them (lowering my bioload before adding the cardinals) they are in hiding.

That brings up another point...are your OSFF the boldest fish you have ever seen? I basically cannot scare them other than them simply moving away from my hand as it gets near them. They almost never 'spook' like most every other fish I've kept.

I would agree. I've accidentally bumped mine with my hand when feeding and that's never happened with any other fish. Only they and my bristletail file will eat from my hands. And they're alwys out front in the tank, never enter the rockwork.

My pair regularly graze very low turf algae off my power heads when the flow is off. What algae do hours eat? Anyone's eat nori?
