Oxymonacanthus longirostris pair enters a mixed reef environment

I dont know if I am lucky or what.. I used my homemade food and they started nibbling the first day... It is just blended prawn with Vitamin C... Nothing special... Now they go for everything that drop into the tank... Including new fishes... LOL...:spin1:

Someone in my area was selling some small colonies of sps yesterday so I took a trip over to see them. I ended up getting 3 nice colonies and 1 free large colony that has seen better days. I did this in hopes of diversifying the filefishs' attention across several different corals.

A video of them eating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPrAFhCTUFg

Now for a couple of my observations:

The larger filefish is not all that interested in eating coral. She always goes for nutramar ova and can be seen picking it off the sand bed and rocks.

The smaller filefish is much more interested in coral, although she at times eats the ova as well. She is almost constantly at the new free large sps colony that that is loosing tissue and color, she absolutely loves it.

The larger filefish continues to let the smaller one know who is boss.

Woohoo, mine is starting to pick the pellets off the bottom of the tank... Hope it will pick on the reef paste but it just refuse to go near it..

Gosh I'm jealous of all this success! Came home from vacation today and all the tanks are fine but the files would not eat after I turned the lights back on. I'm hoping it's just a rhythm thing and they get back into it tomorrow!

Renton777, you are killing me with those leopard wrasses. Oi! So pretty. I had wanted to get that species but when my best LFS got in a super healthy little pair of juvi meleagris, I couldn't pass them up and they've done great for me. But the color on those vermiculate is just something else. You're tank is very pretty in general. And it's interesting to see the files eating coral. Thanks for sharing. Videos are the best!

Both files are snacking away heartily. I am not sure what was going on with the tank last night since I didn't even see the chromis come out from their 'bedrooms'. I assume it was from turning the lights on again after they hadn't been off for a long enough period.

Parameters are all fine but I'm doing a nice 30g water change currently to get some fresh H2O in the QT, which tends to make the files eat a bit more aggressively anyways.

Renton...watched that video again and now I want some leopards! I hope I can get some tamarins in though to stave off my wrasse need for a while longer.

What is reef paste?

This???

It is picking at the sliverside that I hook up for the toby...

I actually intended to get meleagris but when the shipment came in to my LFS they were these lovely ladies. I do hope to get meleagris or potters in the furture, though that will be a lot of different leopards!

Small alien, I really love your tank and really enjoy your videos. Just curious, what temp do you keep your tank at? Do you recommend lower temps for the pipes?

Thanks. That's mighty nice te hear. My tank runs 77-78 F. As high as 82 on the few hot summer days we get. My understanding is the flagtails can handle regular reef temps. You might try your temp question on the seahorse forum for more opinions. Cheers.

I was updating my tank thread but figured I'd come share here as well.

This was the shape my female was in on the day I got her:

And this is her today when the lights came on (before eating)

Oh....and THANKS Rogger!

I was encouraged by D5HP's success in getting his OSFF to each rogger's reef food and loved the idea it would provide food all day because its consistency prevents if from dissolving and breaking up in the water. So, I went out and bought some. The first couple of attempts none of my fish were really interested in eating it. So last night thawed it and mashed it up really good into fine pieces with a fork. I then fed it to the tank and presto everyone started eating it, including the OSFF. So this morning I put a small piece on a clip and the dominant OSFF started nibbling it! I am very happy with this development. Thanks D5HP for sharing your previous experience!

I definitely need to try the Rogger's. I was thinking that just this morning. No one around Seattle sells it so I may have to order it online. It sounds awesome.

AWESOME!

That's about the exact way mine got onto it. I had to chop it up and then everyone had some. I have to use two clips still but I normally keep the same food in each clip so there is no bickering. I am actually ordering another 14oz of the food tonight from DFS while their PE is on sale.

It really is a fantastic product and I don't think I would be having as much success with this species without it.

I definitely think its worth getting even if you have to pay for shipping.

Well after over a year of trying to beat all the fast fingered fish fanatics on DD, someone was kind enough to give me a chance to get a female for my little guy. Hopefully she'll be an easy train.

Congrats twiggyb! It will be interesting to see how they interact upon introduction.
