Oxymonacanthus longirostris pair enters a mixed reef environment

The three fish are doing well. The skinny male took much longer to get his feeding up to snuff. He was just so pooky about it. But he's doing much better now. Eating mysis, roe, prime reef flakes and sometimes a copepod or two. Here's a terrible video of them eating prime reef flakes. These flakes are just irresistible to the files.

At this rate the male's body weight should be normal in a couple weeks I'd say.

Pleased to report all three fish are doing well. No fighting. A little chasing but chasing seems pretty normal for these guys when they're in pairs, so.

All three are eating most everything; roe, mysis, cyclops (though they seem to target the dead exoskeletons), prime reef flakes, small NLS Thera A pellets, and Sustainable Aquatics pellets. I haven't tried anything else.

Here they are eating the NLS pellets.

Been reading through bits and doing some skimming through here. Very good read IMO!

So, what kinds of corals have you not been able to keep because of them nipping?

Hey there. I removed two Lobos and two Fungia sp. when I introduced my first pair to the tank as they were being nipped. They also nipped at some Monti sumpinorother. It kept its polyps retracted but continued to grow and appeared fine. They seem great with shrooms, polyps, leathers, and Euphyllia spp. I've basically switched my coral population over to all those corals you're never supposed to introduce because they'll over run your tank. Well, I decided that's what I wanted. I want to focus on fish and fish that are heavy feeders. I don't want fussy coral. So, I sacrifice some color and interest there in favor of a robust and interesting fish population. I'm happy with my choice.

Cheers, "he who is small" :spin2:

RIP osff. Im done with those guys for now. Until I find one that eats prepared before I buy it. or when I have a huge tank with tons of established acro colonies. They are on my impossible list for now... sucks.

Small Alien I hope your trio is doing well!

I have once again acquired a pair of OSFF's from Diver's Den. I had my first pair in a 93 gallon cube mixed reef. They ate ova and sometimes Rogger's food, however after 6 months one of them quickly lost weight, stopped eating and wasted away over a 2 week period. The second fish did the same thing after 9 months even though it continued to eat well. That was about 5 months ago.

I have since upgraded to a 210 gallon mixed reef and added significantly more sps corals to my collection. While I tried to resist the temptation to get another pair, I could not resist last week when Diver's Den had a pair up for 4 or 5 days.

Before the fish even arrived I sought out additional Pocillopora frags/colonies as my first pair had always liked to snack on it.

When the new pair arrived they were in great shape and had more weight than my first pair had when they arrived. They were nipping sps in no time. Additionally they ate ova right away. After watching them for a week there are a few differences between this new pair versus my first pair that has me optimistic that this pair will fair better. First, the new pair has already accepted a wider variety of food - ova, cyclopeeze, sustainable aquatics hatchery diet pellets and mysis shrimp. The old pair really only ate ova on a regular basis. Second, the new pair both eat right out of the water column versus the old pair only picking food off the bottom. Third, I have a lot more sps that they may be able to snack on and if needed I can get a steady supply of pocillopora from the local reefing community.

I have a webcam on the tank here (usually on during working hours on the weekdays, unless I forget to turn it on): http://www.ustream.tv/rentonreef Its just a matter of time before the OSFF swim by.

A few pictures of the new pair (please excuse the crazy looking algae growing on the new rock :spin1:) :

Showing relatively good body mass for just arriving:

A pair on divers den usually runs $90 plus shipping around $35.

Thanks Monkeyfish!

The tangs do not bother them. None of the fish do, and the filefish do not seem to be afraid of anything.
