Oyster Feast

Reef Nutrition here:

Arcti-Pods effect different skimmers in different ways. Some don't get effected at all, others "head" is knocked down for several hours. This is the first we've heard of 24+ hours though. It is due to the oils that are inside the arctic copepods leaking out. This can be from either how it was mixed in our production (few broken copepods), or over time an enzyme inside them breaks down the carapace allowing the oils to leak out (which determines the "best before" date on that product). The oils are in fact the main nutritional component of the copepods. With out them, the copepods are just empty shells.

The "best before" stickers we stopped using many months ago and the actual date is now printed on the RIGHT side of the front panel in black. It's rather hard to see unfortunately. With that in mind we had new 6oz labels printed for Oyster-Feast and Phyto-Feast (not LIVE) where the date is printed by the UPC on the left side of the label. This is very easy to see as it's black lettering with a white background. Over the next year we'll migrate the entire line to this style. Until then you'll have to look at either location for the "best before".

As for the recommended dose, it's a guideline, not something set in stone. It was arrived at in several ways, mainly what I found myself worked in my heavily stocked tanks at home. It's very hard to put on a label what every reefer should dose as we all have different levels of stocking density, corals, fish, etc. so start slow and work up to what you feel is appropriate for your bio-load/tank.

Thanks for responding Reef Nutrition.

I love Oyster Feast, Roti Feast and Artic pods. The corals aways seem to go nuts over them. I don't understand why anyone would worry about loosing the foam head temporarily from feeding these foods. It would seem like a waste to dose food and have the skimmer instantly pull it out. I actually hooked my skimmer up to my Aquacontroller feed timer to turn it off for 2 hours for feeding.

I use reef frenzy, roti-feast and oyster feast once a week on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. I haven't gotten up to the full dose yet, I was told by the LFS to gradually work up to the full dose.

Gresham is a good guy and Reed's is a good company! He took care of a problem I had with fuzzy phytes about a year ago in a MORE THAN FAIR way!!!

I'd have to say I use the oysterfeast and rotifeast mostly....

I actaully use the Arcti Pods to feed my Anthias prior to lights out knowing it will knock the head off my skimmer for a couple of hours. That way when I feed Phyto or Oyster feast, or whatever, I know it's not being skimmed out right away.

Thanks for the info on the expiration dates Gresham. I've fed Arctipods in the past without the problem; I'm checking out a new LFS this weekend and I think I'll pick up a new bottle.

Thanks Chuck, I should have mentioned that trick. :)

Another on is: If I am going to feed just Roti-Feast one day, I first add a small amount of Oyster-Feast to get the corals in feeding mode. Roti-Feast, being a whole celled product with extremely little amino/HUFA leakage, doesn't entice a big feeding response, but it's an excellent feed.

 thanks, I appreciate that :) That's a great close to a bad week for me, seriously

Glad I can be of help :) Please let me know how it works out. I also do all the QA here so any and all feedback is highly appreciated.

I whole heatedly agree with your LFS, great advice. You may very well not need the full dosage. I wish there wasn't a bazillion factors when trying to figure out a proper dose to print on the label and was nearly as easy to figure out then let's say, dosing CA/ALK?MG :)

Every tank has it's own dynamic metabolism. If you start slow and build up over time, your tank is more likely to utilize the feed being given to it. This is also why I suggest feeding every day, even if in small amounts.

That's what I'd like to learn too :)

I'm wondering if my LFS sold me an old bottle that was very close to or past its expiration date. (They had pulled all the stickers off the bottles...)

That`s a dishonest practice. If i were you i`d find a different LFS and tell them why your switching.

Being there haven't been any stickers used for over 7 months I suspect they didn't remove the sticker but rather the best before date is hidden by beign printed with a black font on a dark blue background.

That's it - they had one bottle about to expire with the sticker on it; the others had no stickers. I didnt see anything on the bottles themselves until this thread. I did find the stamps after Gresham said look in the dark blue. This was a LFS that moves a lot of product, I would have been surprised if they had sold me an expired food.

Man this oyster feast really is crazy stuff. I wait till my lights go out for about an hour. At this time i have 2 R2 Solutions Extreme Moonlights on. I turn my return pump off and keep my 2 vortechs on Then i add almost a teaspoon of it in some tank water to the display. With the return off it gives it 5 min to cycle through the display before going into the sump. I also shut th eskimmer down of an hour. I cant believe the PE form my corals eating this stuff up I can see it pretty good with the moonlights on. I wish i could get a pic, but its too dark.

Do you feed it every night?
